Does anyone have any ideas why the Redington family from Ballinasloe changed their name to Coen at the beginning of the 1900s. Michael Redington married Kate Purcell, all their children were registered and baptised either Redington or Reddington. But from the 1901 and 1911 census and there after they were known as Coen.
Many thanks. Heather

I cannot say why they changed their name but can state
LINK (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000798170/) to 1901 census where shown as CONE; dated March 31st 1901
Their child Theresa was registered as REDDINGTON on April 8th 1901! LINK (https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1901/01950/1743917.pdf)
Most of their children seem to have been born at Tea Lane which would imply perhaps some subterfuge with the constable who was filling in the census return!
What I did notice, although bearing in mind COEN is a common name in Galway,
one of the sponsors at Patrick's baptism in 1887 was a Thomas COEN

Michael REDDINGTON, a bachelor and labourer; full age; his father James a farmer (alive)
to
Kate PURCELL, a spinster and servant; aged 19; her father Martin a labourer (alive)
Witnesses Thomas DONLAN/DONNELLAN & Anne Shaughnessy
I had wondered if there was a connection to the COEN name in their families but locating their births is proving difficult. There are at least three Martin PURCELLs living in Ballinasloe in the 1850s.
