Hello
I put a question on this forum the other day and it was answered very quickly - amazing!
I am still stuck with this family though, so here goes:
Mary Evans was born 23rd July 1854 in Cerrigydrudion daughter of Thomas Evans and Margret (Margaret) ???
Gadget kindly confirmed that Mary married William Thompson on 27th March 1882 in Llanycil and that her father was Thomas Evans, a shoemaker.
I believe that I have found Thomas Evans and his wife Margaret on the 1871 Census in Brynpatre, Moelfrey, Corwen with Thomas born abt 1819 in Cerrigydrudion and Margaret born abt 1834 in Llanfawr?? Thomas was a Shoemaker.
I cannot find Thomas and Margaret anywhere else, do not know Margaret's maiden name or where or when they married. Was Mary an only child?
I have found two possible deaths for Thomas Evans in Corwen:
i) 1877 Qtr 2 Year of Birth 1817 Vol 11b Page 0300
ii) 1878 Qtr 2 Year of Birth 1818 Vol 11b Page 0298
I may be completely wrong with the above but am getting nowhere at the moment and would be grateful for some help. :)
Thanks
Catherine

If you are certain of Mary's date of birth then using the new gro search, which shows mothers maiden names then this looks a possible
Mary Evans September quarter 1854 Corwen district mothers maiden name Jones

Thank you Mike - I had no idea about this. I've just had a look at it - brilliant! Catherine :D
-
That's the Mary I've been chasing on the GRO which led to marriage registration of - -
Thomas Evans , Corwen, 2nd Qtr 1852, 11B 731 - same page Margaret Jones
-
Brilliant - thank you so much! I really didn't know about this new GRO search facility - really useful. Catherine
-
You did ask was she an only child, the bad news is there were 13 female Evans jones births in Corwen district 1850-1854, and 10 males.
I did spot a Thomas in 1853, but there are an awful lot to choose from :)

Ha ha! Thanks Mike - Evans and Jones in Wales - not really very difficult!! Thank you for trying but, more importantly, thanks for the hint about the GRO search - it has already helped me with another unrelated query! Catherine

Hi
There is an interesting baptism in 1819
Cerrigydrudion
21 Nov 1819 Thomas EVANS, son of Thomas and Elinor
Thomas, the father, was a cordwainer - i.e. shoemaker

Hello again Gadget - I agree, thanks, that definitely sounds promising. Really helpful. Catherine
-
The marriage was on 12th June 1852 at Llangwm (transcribed as Dinmael), Denbighshire.
Thomas and father both shoemakers.
Margaret's father - John Jones, farmer of Ffrydwen.

Thank you, David. Everyone is so helpful - I love Rootschat! Catherine

Do you have any idea where Ffrydwen is? I've Googled it and just get one entry in Welsh which I can't understand!!
-
1851 Census ref HO107 2509 34 4
Thomas Evans, Head, Widower, age 30, Shoemaker, born Llangwm, Denbighshire
Address Ty Crydd (appropriate!), Llan & Foel, Corwen
-
1841 Census ref HO107 1402 37 9
Thomas Evans, 25, Shoe m.
Jane Evans, 20
Evan Evans, 3mths
Address - Shop, Cerrigydrudion
The addresses around this census entry compare with the addresses around "Ty Crydd" in the '51 Census.
Note- re. the age 25, allowing for rounding down, this gives a a YoB range 1816- 1812, which doesn't fit the 1819 baptism and 1851 census (age 30). Wondered if the ages had been incorrectly rounded up! Need to cross check other entries.

Ah, I see it now, down the bottom of the page, I have never noticed that before, mind I usually get distracted by looking at other places on the map. :) :)
I went to Llangollen as a child in 1948, it was the first time I had ever been out of the village I was born in, I was captivated by looking at the river from the bridge, I had never seen a river before

I went to school in Llangollen. I must have walked over that bridge nearly every day :)
We used to go on school trips to most of the areas that Catherine's ancestors came from - three of my lines came from the the parishes around Bala and Corwen.
small world :)

I'm not sure if you have Margaret on the early censuses. I think this is most likely to be the family in 1841:
Graig Twrch, Cerrigydrudion, Denbighshire
HO107/1402/1/39/12
John Jones, 30, farmer
Dorothy, wife, 25
Margaret, d, 6
David, s,4
Anne, d, 2
All but Dorothy b. Denbighshire.

Thank you all - the maps are great. So interesting. So, does it look like Thomas Evans was married to Jane prior to Margaret Jones? Jane dies sometime between 1841 and 1851 and Thomas marries again? Catherine
-
Llanfawr now known as Llanfor a mile or two on the Corwen side of Bala.
-
Brilliant, Zetlander - thanks. Catherine

I was in a bit of a rush when I posted the marriage of Thomas to Margaret and missed that he was a widower.
However, I don't believe he is the person in the 1841 census, which accounts for the age discrepency.
There were two marriages of a Thomas, shoemaker, to Jane. The first was to Jane Jones in 1840 and they had a son, Evan.
I believe this is his family in 1841:-
Cross Cottage, Llangwm, Corwen Union, Denbighshire
Thomas Evans 50 Shoemaker
Elinor Evans 50
Cadwalader Evans 15 Shoemaker
Cathrine Evans 13
Next door but 1 at Tynycelyn, Llangwm
Thomas Evans 20 Shoemaker
Marriage 5 November 1842 at Llangwm
Thomas Evans, shoemaker, son of Thomas, shoemaker
Jane Ellis, minor, of Tynygroes, daughter of Robert Ellis, dispensing minister.
I can't find any children or a death for Jane.
Some interesting old pictures and wills:-
