Title: Location of Walcot "Old Ground" Bath
Post by: fisherj on Monday 30 January 17 23:40 GMT (UK)
I have read in a publication on line that Henry Fisher of Walcot 1712 - 1791 was buried at Walcot "Old Ground".  There appear to be a number of graveyards at Walcot.  Can anyone advise me where this burial ground is exactly please?
Many thanks

Others may know for sure, but I would assume this relates to the churchyard around the church itself. It was very crowded in such a large parish, and bounded by roads on two sides so there was no room for expansion. I believe there is an "overflow" burial ground elsewhere in the parish

Have a look at the Bath Burial Index:

But I'm not seeing a Henry Fisher, buried in 1791?

And a silly question!
Are you sure this in Walcot, Bath?
And not Walcott, Leicestershire? :-\

The Bath Burial Index only has St Swithin's entries for 1801-1864. FreeREG has earlier records and shows Mr Henry Fisher buried 26 Nov 1791. That record does not mention where exactly he was buried.

The original graveyard was indeed around the church. The only "overflow" site in use by 1791 was at Walcot Gate, just across the road, starting in 1780. If the reference to the "Old Ground" was contemporary then it would presumably refer to immediately around the church. If written significantly later it might possibly mean Walcot Gate as opposed to the several cemeteries established later further away.

Many thanks to you all for your suggestions.

It is indeed a Walcot Bath graveyard that I am trying to find.

That Henry Fisher was buried in Walcot "old ground" came from an article in Survey of Old Bath 17 (p36 of actual document) by Allan Keevil.  Unfortunately (for me) this information is not referenced.

But his burial place must be documented somewhere.....?

Any more thoughts?

The reference to the "old ground" seems to come from the Bath Journal entry quoted. It's dated two days after the burial so could have included that detail.  In that case it must surely refer to the original churchyard right by the church.
