Hello I noticed you posted on a earlier board for information on Joseph.
Do you know who his parents were? That would certainly be a big help.
When did he move to NZ? I looked on 1851 and 1861 census no sign of him. Was he still in Canada
in 1871.

The 1851 Census for Toronto has not survived, so if he was in Toronto at that time, you won't find him in the census.

I notice that his marriage and death record are available -- only the index is online, so perhaps ordering copies of both might provide you with the names of his parents.
-
Also, what did he name his children?
-
yes i have his marraige cert which sadly at that point of time in NZ was brief and doesnt show parentsnames
IT could well be he didnt even come from Canada or that may not be his real name Ive scoured Canadian records as much as i can access to no avail

There is a Joseph Squire, aged 8, in the 1861 Canadian Census in Markham Township, York County, which is not too far north of Toronto. His parents are noted as George (born England) and Harriet (born United States). Several siblings: Charles, Eleanor, Henry, Adele, Ann, Harriet, and Georgetta. All are Church of England.

... [Joseph Thomas' sons:] Thomas William Henry and Gilmore Strathen
Are Gilmore and Strathen (sur)names from his wife's side? If not, they could be his relatives' or ancestors' names.
-
Josephs Wifes sister Helen's husband was John Strathern Gilmore :)
-
Well, that's not helpful. ;) ;D It was worth a shot, I guess.
What about Thomas William Henry - could that be from his side? Did any of his grandchildren have surnames for middle names? :-\
Do you know Joseph's occupation when he first reached New Zealand, please?
