My Great Uncles Richard Ernest Witherington (service number 29763) and (still to be confirmed) Thomas M Thompson (service number 4717) served as Privates during the Boar War. Information from 'Find My Past' states under 'notes' that they both had The Queens South Africa (QSA) Medal Clasps: Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902. Can anyone please explain exactly what these were.
RE Witherington's regiment was the 100 (Northumberland) Company 5 Battalion Imperial Yeomanry (quite a mouthful) which makes sense as he was from Newcastle, however TM Thompson, who was from Gateshead, was with the 1st (King's) Dragon Guards. As mentioned I can't confirm, as yet, if this is my Thomas M (Murray) Thompson, are there record anywhere of addresses or just towns that people came from? Any information I would be grateful for.
RE Witherington was born in 1878 and TM Thompson in 1875.
Many thanks, Paul Thompson

Mr Wiki has the full list of clasps awarded for battles and campaigns, together with dates and the order in which they should be worn.

Many thanks BumbleB, just had a look at Wiki, very interesting. Cheers, Paul

I thought it was easier to point you in that direction, than my trying to explain! :-[

Incidentally it was the Boer War! ;D
(It's dutch for "farmer")

4717 Thompson was Thomas Monat Thompson from Leith. Father Wililam, 45 Albany St Leith
20 years of age on 20 Mar 1900.
29763 Robert Ernest Witherington (his papers have his first name crossed out in pencil and Richard substituted) has Newcastle as place of birth 25 years 6 months on 14 Feb 01. Father Wiliam, two addresses, 5 Harthwate Terr (?) and 244 Enfield Terr Gateshead.

There is a record for a Gateshead Thomas Thompson, father Thomas 116 Walker Street although the given age is a bit out.
A number of other T Thompsons have medals from the Boer War but those records have no identifying
information.

Oooops and I did well in history at school so should have known.
Shouldn't it be Dutch and not dutch?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks to all for your assistance.
MaxD yes the Richard E Witherington is the correct one, his father was William and at the 1901 census was living at Hardwick Terrace, Gateshead.
Wrong TM Thompson unfortunately, just needed it confirmed. Trouble with common surnames and also common Christian names is that there are so many of them, that's why it's nice when they have a middle name it helps (sometimes).
Again many thanks, appreciated.

By the way, 'Dragon' in the original post should be DragOOn'.

Thanks Ainslie, I didn't do very well with spelling, Boar instead of Boer and Dragon instead of Dragoon. Both correct spellings on my notes, all I can put it down to is composing the post late at night when I was tired.

I usually blame dyslexic fingers! ;D
I only mentioned the Boer spelling, because I have come across so many people who believe it's spelled like a pig!! :-\
-
I suffer as well, and managed to avoid posting a bad joke involving fire-eating Dragoons.

I suppose it is going too far to observe that there should be no brackets around the word King's in the regiment's title - thought so ;) ;)

Aaaah, come on guys, give me a break!!!! Actually the printout I have from 'findmypast' has brackets around (King's). Yes it does say Dragoon and yes it does say Boer War, but it does have brackets around (King's).
While I have your attention, why can't I put a smiley on my comments as you all do. Whenever I press one of the smileys it comes up with ::) or ??? ;D. I have checked attachments and other options and the 'don't use smileys' is not ticked.
Paul
Forget that last question, when I pressed send they come up, strange, but now I know.

When you are writing, or editing, a post the smilies come up in text.
You can see what they will look like if you click on Preview.
Just one of those idiosyncrasies you get used to! ;D

Thank you, now I know :D

Good morning,
Just to put the record straight on the regt'l title, different web sites put it differently. As an ex cavalryman I can tell you the correct answer.
From 1751 they were officially 1st (The Kings) Dragoon Guards
From 1921 they were officially 1st Kings Dragoon Guards
After amalgamating with the 2nd Queens Dragoon Guards in 1959 they became 1st Queens Dragoon Guards.
