Title: Logans of Ayrshire - We are visiting Scotland this summer
Post by: johnfromkentucky on Thursday 02 February 17 12:42 GMT (UK)
Hello all.  John Logan here from Kentucky, USA.  My family is visiting Scotland and Northern Ireland this summer and very interested to visit places of my ancestors.  I have done quite a bit of research and know my lineage way back through Edinburgh and Ayrshire, but don't know much about where in Ayrshire.  There are the 'old' Logans from 1200s (Robertus, Adam, Dominus, Thorbrand, up through the Sir Roberts when they went to Restalrig).  After the Gowrie Affair looks like a couple of generations lived in East Lothian and eventually back to Ayrshire (David Logan - b 1650 and his son son John Logan - b 1674).  John moved to Ulster, Ireland.  After his kids moved to VA, USA in the early 1700s.

If anyone has any information on these specific Logans, or just in general where I should definitely visit in Ayrshire while in Scotland I would GREATLY appreciate it.  Thanks for your time.

Hi John, and welcome to Rootschat!  Think I might be able to help you here!  The Logan family were very prominent in New Cumnock, East Ayshire, where my maternal family are from.

They were known as the "Logan's of Knochshinnoch", and if you type that into best friend Google, you will find many references to look at, and places you might like to visit.  The Archive you want to visit is the Baird Institute in Cumnock, (previously known as Old Cumnock), which is a just few kms from New Cumnock.

You might also get some info from the New Cumnock Library, I found them both very helpful when I have visited there researching my own families. I have not found a family connection of my own to the Logan's, but as both my maternal families are from there, I'm related to many families still living in New Cumnock, and many who lie there in the Afton Road Cemetery

You will see in the Google search results, there is a New Cumnock historian by the name of Robert (or Bob) Guthrie.  He has done extensive research in the area, and I'm sure he'll will be able to help you in your journey.  A good man to contact.  You will see that he has a fairly recent new website on the History of New Cumnock.

So check out "Logan's of Knochshinnoch" on Google for starters, and I will check out the several New Cumnock books I have.

Good luck, and Happy Hunting!  😄👍

Modified to add one of Bob Guthrie's old website articles!  Magic!

John Lochard Logan, born 30 April 1833 in Whithorn, Wigtownshire [probably actually at the village of Portyerrock], son of Robert William Logan and Janet Conning.  Immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1834, settled in Ohio, moved on to Wisconsin in the early 1850s, died in Eugene, Oregon in 1906.

Robert Logan was christened 15 July 1804 in Whithorn, son of John Logan and Elizabeth Murray.  Janet Conning was born about 1808 in Glenluce, Wigtownshire, daughter of John Conning and Agnes Gibson.

Hi John
Welcome to Rootschat. You’ll probably be aware of much of the information at the following links – http://www.rampantscotland.com/clans/blclanlogan.htm (http://www.rampantscotland.com/clans/blclanlogan.htm) and https://www.scotweb.co.uk/info/logan (https://www.scotweb.co.uk/info/logan) .  There is mention there of a Clan Logan but the link doesn’t work and I haven’t seen much information about it as a webpage except that it is regarded by many as an armigerous clan.  Other people may know better.

As Jeanne says, Cumnock is a Logan centre in Ayrshire.  More specifically, the village of Logan (due east of Cumnock) is sometimes regarded as the real Logan centre.  Having said that, the Ayrshire baillerie of Cunningham, near Stewarton (where Thurbrand came from) was an ancient 12th and 13th century estate.

But I think there are probably several twigs of the so-called ‘Restalrig’ branch in Ayrshire.  For example, I believe I have traced some of my own ancestors back to John Logan (c1670-1740), my 8th g-grandfather, who was apparently a farmer in the Kilbirnie area of Ayrshire.  There are probably other twigs that may include those of your ancestors who moved to Northern Ireland.

Ian

VERY much appreciate it Ian.  I have seen the info on the first link, but the second link didn't work.  Also you mentioned Cunningham, one of the Logan's (Thorbrand de Logan, baron of Gougar in Cunninghame) born in 1272 shows Gougar/Grugar/Grougar/??  I've seen it spelled every possible way.

EDITED :  I just reread your comment and say that you also named Thorbrand.  Didn't see that originally :)

My 7th GGrandfather was John Logan born in Ayrshire about the same time as yours but I've always questioned the dates I have (1674-1677) as he'd be 103 when he died.  He moved to Ireland and died there.

I've attached a small snippet of a piece of the lineage I have.  Robert is highlighted because he's the one that came to America, just don't know exactly when.  John or his father came to Ayrshire from Edinburgh area.  Again thank you all for any info.

I'll have a look at that, John.

The location today called Grougar Mains still exists. It is about one or 2 miles east-north-east of Kilmarnock. In around 1857 it was described as a farmhouse called Grougar Mains (or Grugar, or Mains of Grougar). It was sold to William Blane in around 1777 and there are tax records for his holding from around then. This link is useful background to the Grougar barony and land -  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Scottish_feudal_barony_of_Grougar (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Scottish_feudal_barony_of_Grougar)

Ian (or anyone :)) would you know perhaps where the 13th/14th century Logans are buried (Thorbrand, Thomas de Logan, Adam de Logan, Sir Robert of Gougar/Grougar)?  I have two churches In Edinburgh where the later Logans are buried but not in Ayrshire/Cunninghame, etc
