Title: British Maritime Records

I have been trying to research an individual who was a seaman up to about 1845. Someone has told me that these early records were sold to Canada and are held there somewhere. Can anyone tell me if this is true and if so where they are?

THat would be the Maritime History Archive in Newfoundland.

They only have the Ship's Official Logbooks, some with, some without, Crew Agreements mainly from 1863 - 1938, they do not hold individual records of seamen.

Would agree with Hugh in the main although there are other later records stored there.
They were not sold. These documents were due to be destroyed  in the early 50's  but MHA at MUN, thankfully stepped in to save these records.

Could you give us your man's Full name date and place of birth? We may then be able to put you on the correct course.

Thanks. His name was John Latham and he was born around 1805 probably in Liverpool. The only proved fact about him was that he married Mary Ann Mountfield in 1831 in Liverpool.
