The marriage I'm looking for is between John BRAMMAN & Eliza HOLLINGWORTH. The are living in Eldon St., Sneinton in 1851 along with their 1 month old daughter Lettice and other children from his previous marriage and her 10 year old illegitimate daughter Elizabeth. I have not been able to find a marriage and had come to assume they were just living together.
Then yesterday I found an article in the Nottingham Review and General Advertiser of 17th March 1848 where Eliza BRAMMER was a witness and her maiden name was HOLLINGSWORTH. She said she'd married the previous August. But where is the marriage?!! I can't find a registration and I think it would have been a lot harder not to register a marriage than say a birth or death.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Are you sure that she hadn't been married previously as well - if so she would have married in that name?
A possible is Sept quarter 1846 where there is a John Brammer marrying, and on the same page is an Elizabeth Golland. Newark 15 778

I think that John Brammer married Ann Withers: 6 Aug 1846, St Mary Magdalene, Newark.

Thanks, so that can be eliminated.
No other marriages around that time, so possibly Penholder's original thought was correct and there wasn't a marriage. If there had been it would have been registered.

There might have been a marriage but it may not have made its way into the GRO index.
Michael Foster's books in the 'Comedy of Errors' series explains why and should be required reading for family historians.

In this case you need to physically check the parish registers to see if there was an entry but the vicar was late in getting the marriages to the superintendent registrar for the area missing the deadline for entry into the GRO index.
I heard not so long ago that a very recent marrage in 2007 was late getting into the index and won't ever be there. Vicars have 18 months to make their returns but some are still late.

Interesting posting above.
I was just looking for marriages for Hollin* in Nottinghamshire in 1847 for last 2 quarters. There were none showing for the 3rd quarter, which is possible, but then, checking, none showing for the first 2 quarters either, which I suppose is also possible but more unlikely.

Thank you all so much for your thoughts. I had wondered if it would be possible for a marriage not to get registered but if so then it's really unfair that it's the one I want to find! I feel it's unlikely she would have lied about it in court - but who knows? They were described as unreliable witnesses...
At least all hope isn't lost. One day digital copies of the registers may go on-line or perhaps I'll even get to make a journey to Nottingham Record Office before that.

There appear to be separate entries, would this be an amendment, or separate children? Not locating a death.

FreeBMD only has the 1851 registration, looks as if there was a problem with some of the Nottingham registrations!

Thank you all again for your interest and apologies that I've only just checked back. I've been busy making roman blinds...
I hadn't spotted the second birth registration for Lettice. I wonder what it means? I have her birth certificate which gives a birth date of 1st March 1851 at Eldon Street. Her age is always consistent with being born in 1851.
Regarding the Parker bit of Lettice's name, her grandmother (Eliza's mother, Catherine HOLLINGWORTH) married Richard PARKER in 1829, ten years after Eliza was born. He was ten years younger than his wife and can't be Eliza's father (surely!!) as he was only about ten or eleven when Eliza was born.
Catherine HOLLINGWORTH seems to have been blind from birth, so life can't have been easy for her and her illegitimate daughter. I imagine Eliza must have been pretty grateful to him and that's why she used his surname for her daughter - speculation of course.
