Title: Douglas John BOWLER 1919-1944
Post by: Skoyen89 on Friday 10 February 17 08:11 GMT (UK)
Douglas Bowler was killed in Italy in September 1944 whilst serving with the 58th Anti-Tank Regiment of the Royal Artillery. He was born in Kingston, Surrey in Q2 1919 to Henry John Bowler and Mary Anne Bowler but I cannot find his parents on Ancestry. The birth index gives his mothers maiden name as Bowler which I guess is a mistake. Any help gratefully received!

He was married at Emmington, near Thame in 1940 and I have found this in the Parish Records, and the baptism of a daughter the following year. He married Beatrice Joyce Fry and again I am having trouble finding out anything about her although the CWGC register says she was from Tetsworth, Oxfordshire.

There are Bowlers in Thame, Postcombe and Lewknor nearby so he may be linked to them and that is how he came to meet his wife.

Any info or thoughts on ways to progess would be most useful.....

Have you tried to find Beatrice in 1939 register.
The free index has this which is a possibility
Beatrice J   Butler (Fry,Bowler)   1920   Guildford M.B.

possible remarriage
Marriages Sep 1948
Beatrice J Bowler
Joseph Butler
Maidenhead    6a   130

Thanks, I will try those.  I need to find access to FindMyPast here - I used to use my local library but have moved recently and not sure whether it is available here or need to take out a subscription (in addition to Ancestry).

I doubt that the 1939 would help find Beatrices origins  ;)  What information does the marriage give for both fathers.  Where did you get his mothers name from.

ADDED The CWGC would only give place of residence not her place of origin.

I think it is possible that Mary A was not married though only the birth certificate would confirm this.  What information does the marriage give for the father and who were the witnesses

Hello
It seems Beatrice Joy Fry/Bowler went on to marry a Joseph Butler in Sep 1948 at Maidenhead and she died Feb 2004 at Oxfordshire . The death registration gives her birth as 6 Sep 1920.

The 1939 index doesn't help as she's not living with her family(see the entry in Guildford if you can).
I can't put any more for copyright reasons but that should help you find her on the index so you get the right one.

That date of birth does suggest she is the Beatrice Joy Fry registered at Newton Abbot Devon Sep 1920 mother Mann.
It looks like Robert J Fry who married Beatrice Mann at Newton Abbott June 1919 might be her parents.
Beatrice M Fry died Newton Abbott age 32 Dec 1926 but Robert is on the 1939.

Not doing so well on the Bowlers I'm afraid but I hope that helps. If you have an age or date of birth for Henry John Bowler that could help tie him down.

That confirms what I posted earlier on the other thread  :) - Thread now merged ;D

I have asked for more information on Douglas Bowler and his parents on there.  I think the birth certificate may be needed to confirm his parentage as the information on parents appears to have come from the CWGC web site  :-\

From Oxfhs - Emmington Transcripts. CD.

There is a burial in Emmington, for a Mary Ann Bowler, 11 April 1957.  aged 73.

Looking at the 1939 Register, there is only one Mary Ann Bowler in Oxfordshire b1884 +/2 years.  Bullingdon District.  Which would fit.

(I've edited my post, possible living people), and guess you already know what I found in Emmingon.

Apologies for my enthusiam. :-[

Steve. :)

Hi Sarah and others
Thanks for the responses and tidying up my various attempts at resolving this.  I am sorry for confusing and wasting others time....for some reason my notes did not contain the information generated earlier and I regenerated the request.

Hi, Scruff28.

Welcome to the boards and apologies that no-one has got back to you.

Skoyen89 has used the boards in 2020 so if you wait they may return here.

You could try and contact them directly, but you will need to post again before that facility is available to you.

Hi Scruff 28

Many apologies for not getting back to you.  I visit the site less frequently these days but was on it over the Christmas period and I'm not sure why I didn't pick up your post.  At the time of the original post I was researching for a book on the men and woman on the Tetsworth War Memorial.  In the process I came across some who weren't on it but could have a claim to be.  I included them in the book and it was produced in 2017.

I would really like to get in contact with you.  I will try to send you a private message with my contact details.

All the best
Tony
