Title: Vanishing Elizabeth McLuckie or Deas
Post by: Forfarian on Saturday 11 February 17 10:57 GMT (UK)
Elizabeth McLuckie, born 19 April 1885 in Fountainbridge, Edinburgh, parents John McLuckie and Elizabeth Gunn, married John Leslie Burgess Deas in Edinburgh on 5 August 1904. They had a daughter, Elizabeth Lamb Rutherford Deas, born 28 January 1905 in Edinburgh. John died of phthisis (tuberculosis) on 26 May 1909 in their home at 4 Westfield Road, Edinburgh.

After that, I have failed to find any trace of either Elizabeth. No marriages, no deaths in Scotland, England, Wales or Ireland; no census in Scotland, England, Wales, Ireland, Canada or USA.

Has anyone come across them anywhere?

What about this one there is a passenger list for a Mrs E Deas birth about 1886 age 21 along with her
Leita Deas age 2 born about 1905
Departure London 6 March 1907 destination Wellington New Zealand
Ship Corinthic

Now this could either be a coincidence but there is a marriage for a Elizabeth Lamb Rutherford Burgess Leslie Deas ( a bit of a mouthful ) This is how it is transcribed ...
Spouse Blain Hetherington 1933 New Zealand

Electoral roll record for Elizabeth Deas ...widow   Dargaville New Zealand 1911

Now there is this marriage Elizabeth McLachlan Deas   ( could the middle name transcribed wrong )
She married a Norman Read Bloomfield 1913

Death for a Elizabeth McLachlan Reid Bloomhill 1934 Auckland

Cemetery Records Elizabeth Reid Bloomfield domestic died 29/6/1934 cremated husband Norman R Bloomfield cremated 7/7/1934  ..Waikumete Cemetery

What do you think ?

I think you've got them, Rosie! Thank you.

Looks as if she left Scotland two years before the death of her husband, then. But .... she registered his death in Edinburgh in 1909. Something odd going on!

The birth date in the NZ death index for Elizabeth Hetherington exactly matches the birth date of Elizabeth Deas Jr, so I don't think there can be any doubt she's the right one.

Can't find that 1934 death in the NZ index, either as Bloomfield or as Bloomhill, however.

Thanks, Rosie.

Neither Bloomfield death is in the official indexes, which seems odd.

I found a death announcement in the New Zealand Herald of 2 July 1934 saying that Elizabeth died on 30 June and the funeral would be leaving at 2pm that day for the crematorium. It gives her age as 48, which is almost right - she would actually have been 49.

You might be interested to know that Elizabeth McLachlan McLUCKIE had an aunt, the sister of her mother, already living in NZ since 1864.
The name of Elizabeth McLachlan McLUCKIE's mother was Ellen/Helen GUNN  (not Elizabeth).
Helen GUNN was born on 08 Jan 1857 in Wick, Caithness and died on 12 Jun 1902 in Newington, Edinburgh,  Scotland. Elizabeth McLUCKIE was the informant on her mother's death certificate.

The name of Elizabeth McLUCKIE's aunt was Jemima GUNN (1840-1917), she is our ancestor.

Jemima & Helen were the daughters of Benjamin GUNN (born 1806 Dunbeath, Latheron, died 5. Aug 1888 in Wick) & Elizabeth McLACHLAN (born 1813 Ramscraigs, Latheron, died 28. Jan 1871 in Wick)

Elizabeth McLachlan McLUCKIE had two younger siblings who died as infants/toddlers
Donald Gunn McLUCKIE, born ~ 1886 in Edinburgh, died 1889 in Edinburgh and
Helen McLUCKIE, born 1888 in Edinburgh, died 1891 in St. Giles, Edinburgh

There was also an older half-sister whose name was Maggie Jane STEVEN.
Maggie was born on 26 Apr 1879 in Staxigoe, Wick, Caithness and was the daughter of William STEVEN, butcher in Wick and Helen GUNN. William STEVEN died in 1881 in Wick, I haven't found a marriage.
In the 1881 Census 1 year old Maggie Jane STEVEN is living in the household of her grandfather Benjamin GUNNin Wick
1891: 11 year old Maggie Steven is living with her aunt Margaret GUNN, “grocery shop woman” and her uncle James Gunn in Wick.

Thanks, nzsearcher, that is interesting. I have not been pursuing the relatives of Elizabeth McLuckie, because it is her husband John Deas who is my relative.

On her marriage certificate Elizabeth's mother's name is shown as Elizabeth Gunn, which is where I got it from. However her birth says Ellen.

Thank you for that. A sad story indeed. They do seem to have been an unfortunate family.

Yes, most of them died rather young, very so sad. It is difficult to imagine the hardship and poverty of the late 19th Century. TB and other illnesses took their toll.  Helen GUNN/McLUCKIE's brother Donald GUNN died in his sister's home in Fountainbridge, Edinburgh on 4. Oct 1886, just 38 years old. Helen was present at his death. The Death Certificate states, that Donald GUNN, a seaman/fisherman had suffered from Syphilis for 15 years. He left a wife and one surviving daughter in Wick and his name is listed on the gravestone there. Descendants of his only child are living in Winnipeg, Canada.

Just came across a Jon Burgess Hetherington, who died in Auckland, NZ on 11 February 1960
at the age of 26 years. (--> born ~ 1934) He is buried at Albany Village Cemetery.
Probate: "HETHERINGTON  Jon Burgess - Browns Bay - Concrete Worker"

Considering that Elizabeth DEAS had "Burgess" as one of her middle names and that she married
Blain HETHERINGTON on 6. March 1933, I wonder whether Jon might have been their oldest son.
Will let you know once I have confirmed the names of Jon's parents.
