Title: Young Family Tamlaght and Ballinderry
Post by: Magheraknock on Tuesday 14 February 17 17:46 GMT (UK)
I am researching William John Young born about 1851. His parents were Robert and Isabella Young. William John married a Margaret Jane Adams (1862-1922) on 25.10.1877. They had 13 children, 9 were still alive in 1911. One of the children Margaret Young (1886 - 1958) married a David McMullan (1887-1958). These were my grandparents. I'm keen to trace descendants of Margarets siblings, Lizzie 1878, William 1879, Maria 1881, Matilda 1882 may have married a Samuel Rice. Mary 1884 married a William Brooks. Robert 1888. Emma or Emily 1890 married a Henry Devlin, Thomas James 1892, Agnes 1895. Ella 1905 emigrated to Canada in 1925 and married in 1926 to John Cameron Johnston. There hast to be descendants living in the Cookstown, Moneymore, Magherafelt or Coach District. The Young family seemed to have connections to St.Lukes Tamlaght, Ballyeglish Loup, and St.Johns Ballinderry.

Ella 1905 emigrated to Canada in 1925 and married in 1926 to John Cameron Johnston.
In 1911 census Ella is listed as grand-daughter not daughter (link posted above)

Birth certificate says mother was Margaret Young so she is a grand-daughter-

One of the children Margaret Young (1886 - 1958) married a David McMullan (1887-1958). These were my grandparents.

The only marriage I can find for a David McMullan/Margaret Young is in Castlederg in 1880s- far too early. There is a birth for a child of a David McMullan & Margaret Young in Moygashel in 1914 (David)-

Added-
William's father was Thomas Kennedy Brooks & in 1901 Mary Young was a servant in the Brooks household-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Londonderry/Springhill/Ballydawley/1534774
His mother Jane died in 1903 and by 1911 the family seem to have left Ballydawley-
Administration of the estate of Jane Brooks late of Ballydawley County Londonderry Widow who died 15 October 1903 granted at Londonderry to William Brooks Farmer.

Looks like they moved to Canada- William says 1906 & son 1910 (although we know he was with grandparents in Ireland in 1911). Daughters Margaret & Jeanie & 2 sons (William & Alexander) born in Manitoba. 1916 census-

Invaluable material! Mary Young and William Brookes moving to Manitoba Canada is new information, It is interesting that Ella Young emigrated to Winnipeg Manitoba in 1925. I have details of the extended family of Ella Johnston nee Young who died in Winnipeg on 19/8/1977.

Great to have the information verified. I had acquired most of the D O B from G R O N I but not purchased any certificates. The marriage of Margaret Young to a David McMullan may have been at Tralee around 1906. Still cant verify this. Margaret had Ella on 1/4/1905 and no father is indicated. David and Margarets  first child Ernest was born 20/12/1907. Albert 28/12/1910.David 2/2/1914.
Cecil 18/2/1915.William 14/8/1916. Hilda 15/1/1918. Maria 15/11/1918.Norman 20/1/1923.Eva 17/8/1925. This family lived at Moygashael, Donaghmore and settled in Coalisland.
The names of the Devlin and Brookes children has been helpful. Frederick the son to Annie Young is new information. There is a headstone in St Lukes cemetery Tamlaght dedicated to a Fred Young died 17/11/1980, his wife Isabella died 7/6/1984 and son Stanley died 25/10/2011. More research required to see if this is the same Frederick born in 1915.

Curley
This new information is helpful in bringing forward descendants. Matilda Rice nee Young was from a large family. One of her sisters Margaret Young 1886-1958 was my grandmother. I see from the death certificate a Margaret Young was a witness. This must have been Matildas mother Margaret Jane Young nee Adams 1862-1922-my great great grandmother.
Did the subsequent marriage of Samuel to Mary Kempton in 1915 bear any family.?
Do you have a date of death for Samuel during WW1?

Certificate (online) will give age, place of death and name of informant (also possibly father's occupation) which should help confirm or rule out the death.

Matilda Young ,married to Samuel Rice died 24 March 1910 at birth of Frederick,
Samuel Rice died in W W 1 and is remembered on Coagh war  memorial.

Thanks to Curley and Aghadowey. I don't intend to get involved in the military history. The background has been helpful. Main interest is in the descendants of Youngs, Ewings and McMullans  alive today.
