Title: Marriage ROBERTSON/ROBINSON and MCDOUGAL possibly Wigtown
Post by: meeganf on Wednesday 15 February 17 06:15 GMT (UK)
Hello
Looking for the marriage of Andrew ROBERTSON/ROBINSON and Isabella McDOUGAL. Apparently a family Bible has their marriage as 31 May 1822 possibly in Kirkudbright although I have found nothing in a 10 yr period of that date anywhere on one particular website.
Their first child was possibly born in Wigtown in Oct 1822 so they may have married there. Others were born in Troqueer, Rhonehouse and Tongland prior to their move to England.

Can anyone suggest anything from here please?
Thank you
Meegan

Hi Meegan

They certainly christened their children which helps as the Old Parish Registers, relating to the established Church of Scotland, is the main source of surviving records. Unfortunately, details of their marriage/banns may not have survived over time.  I have often found that I can find birth/christening details but then fail to find the marriage/banns.

Overall, only about a third of BMD events are to be found in the OPRs (death/burials were the worst maintained). Lots of reasons for this really. Registers lost/destroyed over the years, the cost of registering and christening children could be a deterrent to many, different religions outside of the establish Church of Scotland etc.

On a positive point, you do seem have confirmed details on the children's birth/christening details  :)

Thanks Monica - we assume these days that everything is "out there" and, in a way, it is good to find that not everything is. Thanks for your diligence and your prompt reply
Best wishes
