I'm looking for why Anthony Daniels was admitted to Claybury Mental Hospital, Essex. He died there April 1922.

I see that Anthony was 76yrs old when he died. He was in a mental hospital in 1911 and in the London county lunatic asylum in 1901 What is the cause of death on his death cert?

Admitted to Claybury 1894?
The trail might start with a London workhouse admission.
If so, you could look in the London poor law records that are online - particularly those relating to lunatics.

Anthony Daniels aged 48 admitted 27.1.1894 discharged 3.2.1894 - address 4 Nelson Court - blind maker - insane. His marital status has "query" written in the box

Thank you for your comments. This is what I know.
Anthony was born 10 Jan 1851 illegitimate son of Mary. He died 13 April 1922 at Claybury Hospital, cause Artery Sclerosis Indefinite, Cerebral haemorrhage into lateral ventricle - a few minutes. He was married to Eliza, had 5 children. Eliza died 15 Dec 1893. I know when he went into Claybury it is said he was insane. Anthony was my husbands great grandfather. My father in law b 1908 knew nothing about about his grandfather. He was never spoken of.
What I would like to see is Anthony's medical records.

Don't think anything else much survives at the Whitechapel end
The Claybury records appear to be somewhat bitty and scattered. It's even been said that many patient records were dumped into skips by the builders when the hospital was converted into luxury flats. Whether true or not, I have seen such stuff turn up on eBay!

I would suggest that you could start by contacting Redbridge Local Studies and Archives in Ilford, I know they did have some early admission registers.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I was wondering if Anthony suffered from depression. A number of his descendants have suffered over the years. Perhaps I will never know but I will keeping looking.
I used to live in the Ilford area and had a friend who's father was quartermaster at Claybury in the 1960's. I visited the hospital a couple of times. Only being a young teenager I found it very creepy.

I have just found out that my great grandfather Wilfrid t g w Baker was admitted to the Claybury Hospital at the end of WW1, I wasn't aware of this, but found this out through his service record on the forces website. How could I find out further information about this?

I had a response from a Dawn Galer. She wrote 'Please note that although we hold a small collection of the surviving archive records relating to Claybury Hospital the majority of this material was destroyed when the hospital closed. I was, however, successful in finding records relating to your relative.'
All this took place in July 2017.
