Why don't you purchase a transcription of his death certificate?  It should have information to help you proceed with your research.

Charles CLARKE who died 3 Nov 1911 in NSW:
What we've found show he was a Machine Agent, Late of Randwick near Sydney
Widow: Euphemia (Effie).

Victoria, Australia, Wills and Probate Records, 1841-2009
Charles CLARKE who died 3 Nov 1911 in NSW: his will was administered 1913, and only mentions a wife/widow name Emily (mentioned many times and at one part, signed her name):

Granted, District Court of Victoria, 13 Dec 1913
Will & Estate of Charles Clarke of Smith Street, Fitzroy in the State of Victoria, Hotel Keeper, but late of Fern Street, Randwick, NSW, Machinery Agent

Presented to the Registrar 24 Oct 1913
Upon reading affidavits of Emily CLARKE….granted to widow Emily CLARKE of Lyttleton Street, Castlemaine, Victoria……His will was dated 2 Aug 1883.

And a lot more of similar, basically: his two executors in the will - one had died, the other renounced in 1913. and Emily was then granted Probate. He didn't leave much - some real estate, but no personal Estate.

How do you know, that this man who died 3 Nov 1911, is the same Charles CLARKE of Taroom QLD fame who in 1906 was the Auckland NZ based husband of Elizabeth of Taroom ?

The Charles Clarke who died 1911 is buried at Waverly with Euphemia:

Anglican section 20 Select, row 1, grave 6099
Charles Clarke 9 November 1911 aged 61, inscription 'My parents'
Euphemia Clarke 10 February 1947 aged 67, inscription 'Nell"

Euphemia death notice: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article27906770

This is odd, a notice for Euphemia marrying as a widow to William Henry Lennon in 1913. Yet she is interred as Clarke.

Charles CLARKE and Elizabeth BIRD/BAIRD
Had 3 children (which she herself mentioned in 1906 when re-applying for her victuallers license)

Fergus John, Sidney and Charles Edward.

The QLD Birth Index for Fergus and Charles, say mms BIRD.

Fergus was lost in WW1 and there is a BIO about him here:

http://indicatorloops.com/yeronga/
Summary:
Born 15/8 1898  South Brisbane but lived in the small town of Taroom.
His father Charles Clarke  - born in London in 1851
Married Elizabeth Baird (aka Bird)
Had three children....
Father Charles (Snr) owned the Taroom Hotel ...where they lived
In 1902 the hotel burnt down & Charles (Snr) & wife separated and he left Queensland for Auckland New Zealand.
Mrs Clarke rebuilt the hotel (getting her Licensed Victualler's License)
Mr Clarke, it seems, left New Zealand for San Francisco in 1909 "

Whether or not that is all proven/documented - I don't know from that article.

In 1889, Charles was the new owner fo Taroom Hotel:
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article186200867
Have recently acquired it;
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article19820392

Charles (snr)  transferred the Hotel License from himself to wife Elizabeth in 1899
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article97489625

The Hotel was  caught in the Taroom Floods 1890:
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/97494444

Would be good to find the marriage of Charles CLARKE & Elizabeth BAIRD / BIRD in the hopes of ascertaining his parents names.

I've see the passenger list of Charles CLARK 61, married, male, Tourist, b "Surley" England (Surrey?) going from NZ to San Francisco, as a Tourist. Not seemingly travelling with anyone else.
SS Mariposa, arrived 18 Jun 1909, Auckland to San Francisco via Papeete, Tahiti.

hi Sue
thanks for everything so far, there is one thing that different on the marriage cert is that Emily mother name is Elizabeth  where on the cert is states Margaret Reilly, so  did her father remarried, Pearson Thompson, or is this a different Emily Thompson, also is there a divorce for Charles and Emily, as it seems he only stay with each woman 11 years and they where all seems to be working in the hotel industry,, what a man , makes you wonder if each family knew about the other or not, a lot of unaswer question hey
Title: Re: Charles Clarke
Post by: sparrett on Monday 27 February 17 21:37 GMT (UK)
There is ample information about Pearson THOMPSON in the news of the day.
http://trove.nla.gov.au/
Enormously wealthy barrister of UK who lost money in mining ventures and settled in Castlemaine Victoria in his later years.

You need to read this lengthy obituary for Pearson Thompson who died  1872
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/199379757

This other item on his death in 1872 is very revealing
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/88247270

"Mr Thompson has left a son and daughter, the former being a colonel of the 14th Hussars, the latter the widow of a naval cap-tain. To these two children the bulk of his property is left, though we are given to understand that for other little responsibilities that are left behind ample provision is made in the deceasedgentleman's will "

This to me is a clear implication that there were illegitimate children. Perhaps Emily was one of these ;D

So now..

An item typed in full for your interest

Ballarat Star   Saturday 27 June 1868, page 2

"On Saturday (says Wednesday's Daylesford Mercury) Mary Foley, of Castlemaine, who was sent to prison by the local bench for three months, for dislocating Mr Pearson Thompson's hip, was liberated from the gaol at that town. The first thing she did was to break the windows of the Queen's Head hotel, Castlemaine, upon which she was again handed over to the police. How she escaped their hands we are not aware, but about half-past 4 p.m. on Tuesday she arrived at Daylesford by the Castlemaine coach, and went straight to Mr Pearson Thompson's house, who, we may remark, has been crippled for life. On reaching his residence, she encountered Mrs Riley, who is again living with Mr Thompson. On meeting each other, the two women commenced abusing one another, and a scuffle ensued. The neighbours were alarmed by screams of " murder," and the shrieking of a little child of the woman Foley's, the paternity of which she attributes to Mr Thompson. At length the police arrived, and marched Foley off to the lock-up. Should she be found the aggressor, we trust—as it will be her sixth or seventh appearance in court here—that we shall be relieved of her presence for some time to come. We cannot but add that the frequent disturbances at Mr Thompson's house are a scandal to himself and the town. It is deplorable that a gentleman by birth, a member of a learned profession, and the father of a distinguished cavalry officer in the British army, should, at eighty years of age be the victim of abandoned women".

And another a little earlier

The Age (Melbourne, Vic. : 1854 - 1954) Friday 25 October 1867

"Emerald-hill (Wednesday).  Mary Riley summoned Pearson Thompson, to compel him to contribute towards the maintenance of his illegitimate child. The defendant was in attendance, and as tho complainant did not appear the case was dismissed."

Ongoing "problems" for THOMPSON along the same lines
Mount Alexander Mail    Mon 22 Nov 1869

http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/197311375

And.....

Mt Alexander Mail 9th July 1874

"A late Police Gazette contains a black list of those in arrears for maintenance  of children in the Industrial and Reformatory Schools. Among the number is the name of Pearson Thompson who removed from' Daylesford to Castlemaine years ago, and died there. This paragraph will bring a smile on the faces of many of our readers in this district who hail from Castlemaine and Daylesford ".

There is this death in Qld

1952 Reg: C1828
Elizabeth CLARKE
Father: Bird
Funeral Notice for this woman but no relatives mentioned so it's difficult to be sure she is the correct person:
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/50312214
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/124582586

There is an on-line tree which has photographs of Charles and Elizabeth taken from the Rockhampton Morning Bulletin, unfortunately undated and I cannot see it on TROVE. The photos are captioned "Clarke "dynasty" founder Charles Clarke" and "Elizabeth Clarke, Nee Baird". Tree also has photos of the three sons.

This tree also suggests that this is Elizabeth's birth:
Victoria, 1863 #8405
Elizabeth BAIRD
Birth Place   Inglewood, Victoria
Father   Fergus Baird
Mother   Martha Waddell

As her third son was called Fergus it seems a possibility.

Another child of the same parents and also born Inglewood, Victoria (i.e. a sister of Elizabeth), Mary Lyle BOLGER (Nee Baird)  was in Taroom Qld in 1908, so, again, there is strong circumstantial evidence that the birth is correct.

Electoral rolls:
Elizabeth CLARKE is shown at Taroom, licesed victualler 1903-1917
In 1917 Sidney, labourer, and Charles Edward, bookkeeper, are also in Taroom.(Charles Edward was not discharged from the army till 1919 so it seems the roll was not amended in that time)
1918 Sidney and Charles Edward still in Taroom but Elizabeth is not listed - again, Charles Edward is still in the AIF in 1918.
There are too many Elizabeth CLARKEs to be able to follow her later.

I have quite a lot of further information about Emily's father Pearson THOMPSON.  As he is an aside to your prime research you may not want anything further on him.

I think that it's very likely that they were not legally married.  There is a date given on one of the trees for a marriage in Victoria in 1887 but I cannot find it and the tree does not give any details of where they got this from.

I have copied the photos and will PM them to you (anyone else interested is welcome to ask  :)).  They are a bit large to put on the thread.  According to the tree the photos were in the Rockhampton Morning Bulletin.  I have looked on TROVE and cannot find the photos but TROVE only goes up to 1954 for that newspaper.

There is a Historical Society in Rockhampton and they also have a facebook page.  Perhaps someone there may be able to track down the photos as it would be interesting to see what else was written.

Hi
I agree with Judith, there was not a marriage in Victoria.
staplehouse, if you were to write a timeline, it may help to clarify Charles CLARKE's movements and relationships.

As a start,
1889 the last CLARKE child for Emily nee THOMPSON, was born.

1889 9th July , newspaper report informs us Charles CLARKE leaves Melbourne with a 25 year old woman.
{this is approximately the correct age for Elizabeth BAIRD, born Inglewood}

1889 October, newspaper report informs us Charles is store owner Taroom.

The above 1889 sightings  do not at all suggest a marriage in Victoria.

Sue

EDIT, I left out the word NOT in my type up :o
Makes more sense now. :-[

There are electoral roll listings for Ellen Mary Anne CLARKE in NSW from at least 1958.
Another is listed at the same address.

I will PM.

well this could be as she was always dress well and had plenty of jewellery, is there any other information on this case and would there still be record of this in the archives somewhere, I have look on the net and see that it would have been only about 11 miles from the Newport Hotel where Charles Clarke owned , this could be a reason why she ran off with him and just took his name as she had done it before ,  report it also mention a Caroline Stevenson would this be a sister to Frederick
by the way thank you so very much so far for all the information that you have dug up on here it gives me  the urge to go on searching when you have something to start with,
thank you

look forward to hearing from you in due course

I'm hoping a Victorian expert will be along soon (I'm a NSW non-expert).

Here is the Victorian public records site - recently "upgraded and enhanced " so more impenetrable than it was. http://access.prov.vic.gov.au/

Usually there are Police Gazettes available on subscription sites (ancestry and FindMyPast) which describe people they are looking for and/or people they have apprehended, with a summary of their crimes.   I'm not finding anything on ancestry and don't have a subscription to FindMyPast.

But here is a probate announcement so there must be a probate packet at NSW SRO.

Oh that's right - there is a gap in the online indexes (indices) for probates between 1891 and 1927.   I can look for his reference no on microfiche and hopefully photograph his probate packet if you are interested.

Hi
Some here may have ideas for you, but I think you might get help about it if you posted on the England Board.
The section called not specific to a county.

You would need to give dates and full names and a link to the news item that mentioned the inheritance.

Be sure to link  this post too.

Perhaps someone there will advise you.

If you can copy the relevant part of the newspaper report it would be helpful.

Death of an Angelina Maria CLARKE, nee EVERETT, 70, was registered in Wandsworth (London), Oct/Nov/Dec qr of 1894.  Volume: 1d, p 322

13 Oct 1845 at St Mary, Battersea
Angelina Maria EVERETT, spinster m Charles John CLARKE, bachelor, victualler
Both were of full age and resident in Battersea.
Her father: William Everett, builder
His father:   John Clarke, victualler
Witnesses: John CLARKE, Fanny SPENCER

in 1851 the couple are living with Charles' parents in Kennington - Charles jnr was 18 months old and there is no occupation listed for his father.

Charles is still with them in the 1871 census at 52 Church St, Chelsea
Charles Clarke   46, shoemaker, b Clapham
Angelina Clarke   48, b Brixton
Charles Clarke   21, shoemaker, b Kennington
Mary Clarke   13, b Battersea
Henry Clarke   10, b Waltham Grove
John Clarke   7, b Chelsea

In 1881 Angelina is a 'monthly nurse' with a Mr and Mrs WHITE in Battersea.  She is described as married.  (A monthly nurse was engaged for a period of time to look after a mother and a newborn)

I think this is her in 1891 recorded as 'Anan' CLARKE, b Brixton probably with her son-in-law and daughter Thomas and Mary HEWETT at Westbourne Terrace, Wandsworth.  Again she is described as married but Charles is not with them.

I see a couple of deaths for 'Charles CLARKE' but not enough information to be sure which is the right one.

This MAY possibly be your Charles CLARKE at school; you man's mother was Angelina Maria, and his father in later census was a shoemaker; the age is not quite right either.   ???

Admitted to St Michael's school Westminster, October 25, 1858
Charles CLARKE aged 8 and a half,
Parents: Charles and Maria, occ: shoemaker, residence 10 Hugh St Mews.

I cannot see either of your man's parents on the All England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1966

I think Sue is right - ask on the England board

Judith
