1851 census
HO 107 / 2407 / 221/ 2
Wall Knoll, Newcastle upon Tyne
James Cronney, head, mar, 44, General Lab, Scotland
Bridget do, wife, Mar, 42, Ireland
Mary do, daur, u, 15, Servant out of Place, Northumberland Newcastle
Elizabeth do, do, do, 11, scholar, do do
I'm looking for James and Bridget Cronney, who I can find in the 1841/51/71 census bit not the 1861 census, the name changes to Croney from 1871. if anyone can help with this I would be very grateful. Also anything further about James and Bridget Cronney with regard to birthplace and marriage. If anyone can shed any light on the name change that would be helpful too. Thank you

Maybe of help.....a possibility....the original is in Latin and too hard for me to read, but the transcript on FindMyPast is...

A possible birth for daughter Elizabeth has mother's maiden name as Carney
CRONNEY, ELIZABETH CARNEY
GRO Reference: 1839 M Quarter in NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE UNION Volume 25 Page 304
This is the family in 1841 - all children born in county (Northumberland):
James Cronney 30 Ireland Scotland
Bridget Cronney 30 Ireland Scotland
Margaret Cronney 10
Mary Cronney 6
Elizabeth Cronney 2
If that's correct then the marriage would have been around 1830/31. The only other marriage I can find that looks like a maybe is 19 Nov 1830 in Tullamore, transcribed as James Cronly & Bridget Cainen. Could Cainen & Carney could sound similar-ish to a Geordie listening to an Irish accent ???
Added - Have re-checked the 1841 and PoB is listed as Scotland for both, so possibly that's where the marriage might be rather than Ireland?
To answer your question on the changing surname Roselight, many people couldn't read or write so any official forms were completed by others who wrote it down as they heard it. That's difficult enough, but once you start throwing in different accents it can really get fun!

Following my error on the 1841 I also re-checked the 1851 given by the OP, and there are a couple more children
HO 107 / 2407 / 221/ 2
Wall Knoll, Newcastle upon Tyne
James Cronney, head, mar, 44, General Lab, Scotland
Bridget do, wife, Mar, 42, Ireland
Mary do, daur, u, 15, Servant out of Place, Northumberland Newcastle
Elizabeth do, do, do, 11, scholar, do do
James 9
Helen 5
I'm not seeing these last two births under the surname Cronney, although there is this later one:
CRONNEY, JOHN MMN KEARNEY
GRO Reference: 1849 S Quarter in NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE UNION Volume 25 Page 348
Kearney / Carney both very similar.

Thank you so much for the time you have taken and your contributions to my research.
I'm still no further forward in finding my Cronney family in the 1861 census, can anyone make any suggestions of how I might take this forward please?
