I haven't got an Ancestry subscription at the moment, but I don't want to freeload...perhaps someone could tell me if they think there's anything there that could help me, so that I can subscribe immediately.
I've got someone baptised & married in England, who never appears on an English census. I found someone (same name & age) sailing from Liverpool to New York ( just before the first census) & someone with the same name & age as my man's neighbour's son (also never appears on a census) is on the same ship. A few years later,I can find 2 men with the same details working as labourers in Florida.
However, my man definitely died in Jamaica. A fellow descendant has found a newspaper cutting from Britain giving the details, with his parents' correct names & address:
I've been through the links provided here, but, unfortunately, nothing has turned up. I don't know whether I've got the right man & he moved from Florida to Jamaica (mid nineteenth century) or if I've been on the wrong track all along & the man is Florida is not the one I'm looking for.
All pointers welcome...thanks :-*

Thanks for your reply, jan.....no luck, I'm afraid. His parents were Jewish, but I don't know if he abandoned the faith or not, or if he would have been recognised as coming from a Jewish background. The general material I've read always refers to either free or slave blacks or whites etc &, although it is mentioned that there was a reasonably large Jewish minority, it's never made clear how they fitted into the general picture....I'll keep trying

If he has Jewish ancestry it might be worth contacting organisations specialising in Jewish genealogy.
Good luck!

You might want to consider that he mat have Anglicised his name so you could look for Jewish variants of his surname.
