Good evening
Could anyone look up William Lewis please ?
He most probably was born in one of the villages surrounding Whitby. He married Mary Elizabeth Wilson in 1914 in Whitby. I would love to know who his mother or female relatives were as I have inherited an object that is inscribed B.E.L. and I am hoping that these initials can be traced to one of them ? Unfortunately I do not have any other details other than that he lived and worked in Esk Valley, nr Grosmont.

Have you looked for him on the 1911 census as there was only one entry in Whitby and he was only born 1900?
When was he born? You need a copy of his marriage cert to establish his age and his fathers name
Have you found him on the 1939 register?

Thanks CaroleW and keyboard86. The previous research was really helpful but I never really found William Lewis' parents ? I was just trying to tie in these initials of B.E.L which are engraved on the object I inherited through my mother-in-law that previously belonged to her mother Mary Elizabeth Lewis nee Wilson. I was hoping that William's mother shared these initials. A bit of a long shot but the object has obviously been handed down the family and as there is an L it seemed possible ?
Unfortunately I haven't access to Ancestry at the moment and I've exhausted everything else that I can access on the net.

Those dates for Mary Elizabeth Lewis look correct keyboard86. I met my husband in 1976 and I remember she died a few years after this. The age looks correct too.

Mmm have been back over my research and I think I see my problem here. If he had no father (with the family) and his mother died when he was young therein lies the problem. Guess I'll never know.....

Hi checking the new GRO Index suggests that both William & Ambrose were illegitimate as no mothers maiden name shown, suggest Annie who married William Jefferson?

I can't quite work out why a death of a Annie Jefferson would lead to the correct parentage of William Lewis b Dec qtr 1872 Whitby or shown at the 1914 marriage?

Ha keyboard86 it wouldn't conclusively but I understand that William's mother died when he was young so I was curious about whether Annie died young. Anyway I drew a blank - so no further forward ;D

Hi again the trouble with "I've been told/ I understand " etc etc it does not hold water until proof is found, I do believe that the December qtr 1872 Whitby birth is him, but as no baptism can be located another unknown at present.

Yes you're right keyboard86 ! William was my mother-in-laws father and it was she who told me that his mother died when he was young and that his grandparents brought him up. Unfortunately she died a good few years back so I'll never know.

EDIT No Susannah was the daughter of John/Maria Wilson, another sister Rachel Ann married a Thomas Arthur Grayson.
Which of the Lewis/Wilson boys William & Ambrose had a Thomas W K Lewis 1920 ( who married a Gwendoline) and a Joan M 1923, ( who married a Sidney) Thomas William K Lewis b 17th February 1920 died Oct 1997 Newcastle under Lyme aged 77

William had Ken who married Gwen. I am presuming he was Thomas WK Lewis, didn't know that, thanks ! Joan was my mother in law. She did not marry a Sydney though ? She married Eric.

OK Gwendoline Mary Lewis born 15th December 1919 died July 2003 Stoke on Trent aged 83, they had a daughter Josephine who married in Whitby?
When did Joan marry Eric?

Yes this is the correct family. Joan married Eric in June 1949 in Whitby.

I just remember the name Ambrose. Must have been from earlier research. It's been a while since I did any family history and it was the initials B.E.L. that re sparked my interest. Hence my interest in Williams mother. That and the fact that I've never been able to nail down his parents.

Hi Mary ,I am looking for a William Lewis and AMbrose Lewis ,they lived in a work house in 1871 Forest Gate .,William was b in 1864 ,and AMbrose b in1863 he died in1873 .M y grandad James William AMbrose Lewis arrived in New Zealand ,I want to know if the William and AMbrose could be a connection to the William you r looking for .Cheers Collene From NZ
