I know this is a long shot, but I don't have much info on my dads side of the family.
I remember as a kid my dad talking about Mitcheldean and Ross and his family being there.
I don't have a lot of info and can't get anywhere with the census, so wondered if anyone had a clue....
No dates...Henry rogers (g.grandad) married lilian?
Had gwendoline mabel, Ernest, Donald, Jim, Grace and others
Gwendoline married major clarke??
Moved to mendips along the way??
Any ideas, search tips would be great. Tia

Hi
We can but try! When and where was your Dad born please? Do you have his Birth Certificate as that will give us the names of his parents? From that we can look for the marriage of his parents, and hopefully back we go!

It is always best to start from what you know.
Do you know who your Rogers grandparents were, if not what information does your parents marriage certificate give on your fathers father and who were the witnesses

Hi Mitcheldean & Ross in Wales?

Mitcheldean is in the Forest Of Dean, Gloucestershire.
Ross is Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire.
I've been looking on the FOD site but not getting much joy!
http://forest-of-dean.net/joomla/index.php
There are a few Rogers in Mitcheldean, and 79 records for Rogers in Ross, but no Henry that I can see.

Wow. Thank you for all your help. My dad has passed so I will have to dig around the paperwork and see what I can find...
My dad was Colin Granville clarke born 15.2.1943
His parents were major clarke and gwendoline mabel rogers (known as mabel)
And I always believed mabel parents were lilian and Henry rogers, but I could be wrong. As they didn't talk much about their family and now my dad is gone it's going to be hard.
I remember dad talking about Mitcheldean and Ross (on wye) and going to primary school there.
I will go and see what paperwork I can find and ask my mum if she remembers anything about them..
Thank you all so much.

There is a birth registration in Norton reg dist in 1939 Clarke - mmn Rogers who is probably the person
still blacked out in 1939. I won't give more details as probably still living.
If you use freebmd http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
Select births
District Norton Radstock
Start date March qtr 1939
Surname Clarke
mmn Rogers
It should bring up your fathers siblings that were born there. We are not allowed to post details of possible living people
ADDED It looks as though there was an earlier son called Colin who died in infancy :'(
Norton registration district covers these places

Marriages Dec 1912
Berrett Florence L
Rogers Henry
Bath 5c 1269
She could also be known by her middle name
You will obviously need to get certificates to confirm what I have assumed. ;)
-
Thanks for the information. It looks right. with the L for Lilian (and then being known as Lilian), but I have never heard of anyone being called Berrett in the family?
I am a bit stuck now, as the information looks right, but I'm not sure- think there is a story behind all of this somewhere.
Not sure where to go with this now?
wondering if i should persue the berrett bit of it to see if i can find other links to the family? they definetly were in ross/mitchedean at some point so maybe look more into that?
-
You really need certificates to track back and check what has been posted, it is the only way to be sure. Just follow your direct line.
I think that we are all faced with things we have never heard of when doing family history, we are also often told things by family members which turn out to be wrong.

Not sure where Henry Franks is
Eva sadly died in 1918 in Clutton district
-
Hi
Thanks.
From what i can work out henry died young too.
What i cant work out is
Ernest george clark 1911 was born in Bedwelty and john major clarke 1916 in Harptree Somerset
Did George move with them? And why did they move? And when?
-
In 1911 Henry is with Granny Franks in Ubley, Clutton district
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X7RJ-GQJ
George Clarke's address when he joined up in 1915 was West Harptree, occupation coal miner. He may have moved for work
Not sure about Henry dying young. There's a Henry E Franks the right age who dies in Somerset in 1961
-
Wow. You can tell i am a begineer at all this! Thank you
-
The Bristol and Somerset coalfields started dying out about the turn of the century.
Many of the miners (like my grandfather and his brother) then sought work in the South Wales coalfields - especially around the Bedwellty Registration District - where my mum was born in 1931!
