Title: Need a reliable Database for One-Name Study
Post by: Gary2017 on Friday 03 March 17 06:00 GMT (UK)
Hello everyone,

I am currently using Custodian 4 and there are many glitches in the database and I feel it is too unstable to use.

Could you recommend any databases for the recording of large amounts of data regarding One-Name studies? Either a PC or a Mac database would be acceptable.

Thank you very much.

Kind Regards, Gary

How about Microsoft Access? I use it for most of my surnames and find it's ideal. I have also tried the trial version of Custodian 4  and was hoping the problems had been sorted out by now as it seems quite good. If you can source it Custodian 2 is very reliable, not sure if it would work on Windows 10 though.

Thank you for your reply.  I will definitely take a look at Access.  Can you customize it any way you want for "fields", etc.?  Thank you!

Hello,

Thank you for mentioning those. I've excluded Excel, for my needs, but I will take a look at Ancestral Quest.  Thank you again!

Hi Gary2017 I customize the fields and rename them, very easy to sort data. I would post a screen shot but for some reason it's not uploading my attachment!

I thought the attachment would show up in the preview post, but it didn't.  :o

Hi LadyJane,

Thank you for that Snapshot and I can see where Excel would come in handy and work for certain things.  But I have an abundance of information over many records.  Someone suggested that I take a look at Microsoft Access (since I have so many records)- have you tried this, by any chance?  Other than that, I'm leaning towards Custodian 4 (if they fix the bugs) and Clooz.  Have you tried those also?  Thank you!  Gary

Sorry Gary, I should have said the snapshot is of Microsoft Access and not Excel. I haven't tried Clooz and like you, found that Custodian 4 had too many bugs. Not tried Ancestral Quest, although I might take a look. :)

Hi LadyJane -  Thanks for your reply.  I will take another look at Access based on your snapshot - I do like that it can be customized.  I still have to look at Ancestral Quest as well.  I contacted Custodian 4 and asked if they have any "patches" to fix the program bugs; I'm waiting for their reply at the moment.  If they could fix it, I would definitely use their program. But I just can't take the chance of my data magically disappearing as it does now using their program.  Thanks again - you have been very helpful!  ;-)

Was reading this topic with interest...I use RootsMagic for making family groups and Google Sheets for  everything else. There are some differences between Excel and Sheets, but not enough to overcome the portability of Sheets. I don't know anything about Access, though. Can someone perhaps elaborate on the benefits of Access over Excel from a ONS perspective? TY!

Hi,

I don't know much about Excel except that it's a flat, spreadsheet program. Whereas, Access has many layers. But Access also has a steep learning curve but the better option, once it is mastered. I tried Custodian 1-4 which is good for large amounts of data but I found a number of bugs that makes the program unreliable, in my case. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply. I'll take a look at Access via YouTube. I use OpenOffice or Google's Sheets but never thought of doing anything with any more depth or really grasp why it might be useful.

The OP didn't mention which One-Name  they are interested in studying.
But they might find it here, on the WikiTree database:
