Title: Welsh/clark
Post by: steph_uk2005 on Friday 03 March 17 22:32 GMT (UK)
I am looking for anyone who may know the Welsh family from cumbusnethan or the Clark family from Dalziel-in particular William Joseph Welsh(born 1938) who married Mary Clark(born 1936) in 1957. They moved down to London and had 1 son together.
I believe William had a sister called Anne & brother called Nicholas. Mary had a brother called Frank.
Thank you

Hi

It's likely that some (or all) of the people you mention could still be alive.

Rootschat has a no living persons policy so their names should be removed as we would be unable to post any information unless they were deceased

I've got very little info on Anne & Nicholas.i believe they may also have a sister called Mary but I'm struggling to find all this out.
I know Williams dad was called William & his mum Annie but can't find his siblings details. William seniors parents were Nicholas & Catherine (previous surname Campbell),they had 5 children in total-Catherine,Nicholas,Mary,James & William.
It's so interesting but at times so frustrating & draining.

Hi ,

If you order the 1957 marriage certificate of William Welsh and Mary Clark that will give you both sets of parents names.
https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

You can then look for the marriage of William Welsh and Annie ?(this one will be available to download).

That's brilliant thank you.
I already have the marriage certificate of William & Mary.thats how I was able to find the parents names.
However whilst the Welsh side is easier to trace,I am really struggling with the Clark side.the copy of the marriage certificate is very difficult to read so I'm struggling with Mary's mums maiden name in order to research their marriage.
Thank you for your help.

Were the parents of William Welsh(born 1938) William Welsh and Annie Cupchunas ?

Can you post the section of the marriage certificate that you cannot read ?

Yeah that's right
Sorry I can't upload the marriage certificate as it's saying the file is too big & I don't know how to reduce it.

Could be different folks, but there are a number of mentions in local newspapers of the 1940s, of a Nicholas and Willie Welsh, who were involved in a St Brigid's Newmains Concert Party.

Hi Steph

I can give you some information on Mary (May) Clark.  Her parents were Frank and Mary, Millfield Avenue, Motherwell.  She had 4 brothers, John, Frank, Jimmy and Alex (all deceased except for Frank).  Hope this helps

Wow thank you so much for that information.other than parents names & millfield Avenue,it's the closest information we have been told about Mary.now my next search needs to include information on Frank Clark which I know is not allowed on here as he is still alive.
I also need to find other information on her deceased brothers.this is so interesting.thank you again.

Did the Welsh family also come from Millfield Avenue? I can remember Margaret Welsh, she married someone called Montague, we pronounced it Mon - taig. I met one of her sons a few years ago and he was very offended when I said it like that!
I think they lived next to the Neillys, or perhaps they were in the cul-de-sac, I can't remember after all these years. My grandparents lived in Northfield St and we used to know everyone in the Daisy Park, unfortunately I can't think of the name Clark! It may come back in a flash.

I think this picture was taken in Millfield but no Clarks in it. It's Nellie Merrilies, Lizzie Toal, Mrs Bulloch and Lizzie's mother. Probably taken just before the war, 1938 - 39 perhaps.

Mary's mother's maiden name was Mary Toal (born 1905 Lurgan, Ireland. She married Francis Clark (born 1908 Scott Street, Motherwell) in St Mary's Church, Motherwell, date unknown. John, oldest brother was born September 1932, James born June 1944, Frank born February 1942 and Alexander born May 1949.

Lodger.  There were Welsh's stayed at No 7 Millfield Avenue next to the McShane's at No. 5. Bella McShane was Mary Clark (Toal)'s aunt. The Montague's lived at No 9 Millfield Avenue next door to the Neilly's.

Thank you so much everyone.this really is helpful.so does anyone know who Lizzie Toal is in relation to Mary Toal?
Now I need to find the history of these people to lead to those still alive today.
This means more to me & my father than I can ever explain.thank you

I remember the McShanes very well and of course the Neillys. Wee Maggie Neilly's father went by the name of Darkie Rodgers, he ran the billiard rooms at Oakfield Place. I think all the Neillys are dead now apart from Tom, he lives somewhere in the north of England, the Lake district? I was his apprentice when he had the bakehouse in Merry Street, so I knew all of them. others in Millfield Ave were Sadie Hughes (I think she's in the Old Folks Home down at Parkneuk), her brother Johnnie was a smashing chap, I still meet one of his daughter's now and again. Nellie & Dick Merrilees were great friends of my grandparents, Dick played the drums in Duffy's Hotel. Dan McCue was a pal of my granda's from school, he used to tell us kids that he and Dan were the last of the Motherwell Dazzle Boys - but we never found out what that meant!
Then there were the O'Hara's, (connected to the McShanes?) the old man had married twice so there were 2 families of them, each kind of ignoring the other ones existence. June O'Hara was one of the younger ones. Also the Brown's were in either Millfield or Craigview. My grannie was always on about "Auld Broon" (who was probably younger than her) her eldest boy (Geordie Prentice) had been engaged to one of my mother's sisters but he was killed at the battle for Monte Casino.
Jeannie Jones lived in Craigview Rd, which was really just a part of Millfield Ave, Jeannie was lovely and she and my granny were life-long friends and, spookily, are buried opposite each other in Airbles cemetery. My grandda's sister lived "back-to-back" with Jeannie, in Braidhurst Street.

I think all these people who lived in the Daisy Park had the great advantage of already knowing each other before they moved to the area. They had all previously lived in Park/Scott/Dalziel and Albert Streets and simply carried on where they had left off.

This picture was taken outside 20 Braidhurst Street, probably about 1944.

I've just had a thought. (Yes, I know it isn't like me Sancti).

I know a lady and will probably speak to her tomorrow, she is about 80 and I think her mother was one of the McShane's. She will know the whole family history, that's for sure, so I'll quiz her about the Clark side.

also in that lair (or plot)

BRIDGET CAMPBELL, domestic servant, Newmains, aged 16 years, unmarried.
Parents - James Campbell & Ann McGill.
Interred in common ground, 27th June 1868.

There may be a headstone at E543, I will check today if possible.

I spoke to the elderly friend of mine this morning, she was connected to the O'Brien's at 16 Millfield, not the McShane's as I had thought. She didn't know the name Frank Clark but she has taken a note of it and will ask a few people.

I have checked the plot E543 at Cambusnethan, there are only 2 burials in it, the ones I have already mentioned. So it hasn't been used in 117 years. I also checked today, there is no gravestone but here is a picture of the actual spot.
Just to the left of the black stone.

Lodger

I remember Sadie Hughes very well.  The last time I met her was in Cambusnethan, the night I met my future husband which was 16 years ago.  Also remember Jeannie Jones, the O'Neill's who lived at No 25, Rita Stannage, the Wrights, the Cowans, the Bells, in fact nearly everyone in the street in the 1950s/60s.

Hi again to everyone who had previously helped me find information about the Clark & Welsh families. I can’t believe it’s been nearly a year since I last posted. I got no further with my searches & just wondered for those of you that are still local whether you were about to find out anymore on frank Clark?
Hope you are all well
Thank you
