Title: Please help find Isabella Hall in 1881.
Post by: Isabel H on Saturday 04 March 17 15:25 GMT (UK)
I would like help, please, to discover where my great grandmother, Isabella Hall, was in 1881.   I've tried wildcards and all the variant spellings I can think of, but still haven't found her in that census.

Isabella/Isabel Hall was b 1862 in Hartford Bridge, Northumberland according to most censuses  (1871 says Gosforth and 1901 N.K.).

Her parents Matthew Hall and Elizabeth Coxon were both dead by 1865, and
in 1871 she and her sister, Annie Jane, were  living with her maternal grandmother, Annie Coxon, at Cragside South Lodge, Rothbury.  [No need to look for the sister - I know what became of her.]

I was once told that at the time of the Tay Bridge disaster in 1879, Isabella was in Dundee, as maid or companion to a minister’s wife, but I have no actual proof of that.

In 1889 when she married blacksmith George Jackson, in Felton, her address was Felton Mill, where a Coxon relative was a carter.

By 1891, they had moved to Ulgham where they spent the rest of their lives.

did you look on scotland's people for her as you suspect that she may have been there at some point?

Yes, I have looked at both the LDS transcript and the actual census book entries.

Thanks, Rosie, I'm grateful for your help.
However, she is 2 yrs younger than the one I am looking for. I know that doesn't necessarily rule her out, as her employer, or the enumerator, could have made a mistake, but on checking the 1871 census, I found another Isabella Hall in All Saints parish which I believe is the Gosforth area. She was born in 1864, and although her birthplace is given as Newcastle, her mother is from Gosforth, and I feel she might just as easily be the one in Tynemouth in 1881. I think I need to keep looking.
