Title: Rootschat 'New' Feature
Post by: Ruskie on Tuesday 07 March 17 14:24 GMT (UK)
Something new?

If you select 'Home' from the top bar you come to 'Forum Genealogy topics Right Now' - that is, the new topics just posted and being discussed.

Select any of them from anywhere on the list, and the first four topics on that list appear below the poster's post, separated by a pale line. Often this is where an ad might be shown. I was confused at first and thought it was the posters research surnames or areas of personal interest.

It's quite dominant on the page, and in a larger font than the rest of the text. I am not 100% but it looks like it might be in blue rather than black (or maybe it is my eyes or monitor playing tricks with me).

I am curious to know what this is for and if it will be a permanent 'feature'.

Is everyone else seeing this too?

Hi Ruskie,

Your comp isn't playing tricks, I've noticed it too in the last week at least but not sure when it appeared?

Yes Ruskie, It is showing at the top & bottom of the page as I read your post.   ;D

I am not sure that I like it as it blends in with the name of the 'board'   I quite liked the adds as they reminded me to look at something that I probably had given up searching for in favour of coming on rootschat like this morning when I had been looking for something on ebay.  :D

ADDED - after posting this it is now only at the bottom of your post & the add is at the top  ;D  ;D

Yes, well spotted.

It's a new feature that allows us to show latest topics in the spaces on the page.

I'd ask people, please, to not discuss the ads that are shown on the site.

The feature comes and goes, depending on the time of day, and on what topic you might have come from (or to).

You are all very quick off the mark in replying to this.

Glad it is not just me.  ;)

I only noticed it this evening (my time) but I haven't spent quite as much time RC as I usually do over the past couple of days, so may have missed it when it first appeared.

I spend most of my time on the "home page", so I see the latest topics under discussion there.  :)

Added: I do prefer the threads with illustrations at the bottom of the page though I don't click on them as often as I used to do when this was a new feature, because most of them are quite old topics.

The feature has been around for "above" the topic for a little while (over a week), but comes and goes. It's been added to within the post and the bottom of the post only today. I'm still messing around with a bit, so it might change in the mean time. :)

I'm liking it - the 4 latest ones appearing above the topic I am currently reading.

Means I can quickly see if any of the threads I am currently working on have been added to, so I can nip straight back to them after doing whatever on the current thread, without having to go back to "new replies" to check each time.

I just hit the Home button (rather than "new replies") after posting or reading any other threads. :)

Guess it's as broad as it's long - however you access new replies (either via Home or New Replies) you can now see them whilst working on current thread without having to click on either!

However, it seems to have disappeared in the last few minutes anyway ....... :(

I don't see it and I don't understand the point of it.  On the other, I guess it doesn't matter because I never use the home page anyway.

Not that I ever use the Home page, but hasn't this always been there?

I always use the home page (it's where all the action is  ;) ), but yes, I think it was always a feature.

I think at this particular moment there are just a lot of new threads, so all the "news" are more obvious.  :)

Ahhh,

That explains it Ruskie  ::)

It did kind of 'jump out' today which I hadn't paid attention to before   :-[

It wasn't clear before which of the topics had been visited or not. So now, if the topic is new to you it shows up with a 'new' next to it. :)

Looks like it Ruskie,

A 'new' 'new' feature  ???  :-\

 ;D

I noticed some of the topics which I had read previously had [new] beside them. So it must be that if another reply has been made on the thread, and you have not read that new reply, then it will have [new] beside it.

It is quite possible that every thread could have [new] beside it, especially if you visit rootschat after not being on for a while. :-\

I don't know where 'unread posts' is ....  :(

The home page is the best because if you 'refresh' you 'all the new threads appear.  ;) :)

Yes Annie :)

It will have a "new" next to it if that topic has a new reply since you last went on the topic.

But not on the "Home" page.

I never use the home page either.  I find the listing of the 'Unread posts'  so much clearer than the list on the home page.  :)

I used both but looks as though I only need 'Home' now unless of course I'm searching particular Boards e.g. Inverness or Renfrew etc.

Yes, I think it's very helpful although I was a bit taken aback when I noticed it  ;D

The other little thing that is changed too is that when a topic is moved from one board to another, the "Moved" notice that points to the topic isn't now shown up on the home page.

That's because the moved link it's not really a new topic.

Got it thanks KGarrad!  :)

(I still prefer the home page despite all the new [NEW]s beside each thread).  ;D

What is the point of the little box that now appears at the top of the 'Unread Topics' page?  In the box I can see that the latest posts are:  Oh, Lord - now what.....!; What Regiment did George belong?;  and Aspley Guise, Bedfordshire LOOKUP request fro HUTTON.  Directly below the box is the list of posts where I can see that the most recent are:  Oh, Lord - now what.....!; What Regiment did George belong?;  and Aspley Guise, Bedfordshire LOOKUP request fro HUTTON.

If I click on 'New Replies,' up pops the same little box where I can also learn that the newest posts are:  Oh, Lord - now what.....!; What Regiment did George belong?;  and Aspley Guise, Bedfordshire LOOKUP request fro HUTTON.

And the same thing appears at the top of the Search page.

Enough is enough.  If I want to see the latest posts, I'll refresh the list of unread topics.

And now I see this at the bottom of the page.  Who is it?  Not Christopher Bernard as one might logically suspect.  No, it is my g-grandfather who has absolutely no connection to Mr. Bernard.  His photo only shows up because I have used him as an avatar and I replied to the Christopher Bernard thread.  Why should an irrelevant photograph be used to lure someone into the Christopher Bernard thread?

These pictures and unrelated topics have been appearing on here for quite a while now.  It often picks up avatar pictures as my dog has been there  ;D

"These pictures and unrelated topics have been appearing on here for quite a while now."

Yes, I had noticed them before but I'd never paid them any mind or clicked on one until I saw my own g-grandfather show up.

I still don't see the utility of the little boxes with the most recent posts.  I've even got one on my profile page. Moreover, I have three separate search buttons at the top of the page now  -  seems excessive to me.  Keep it simple; sometimes less really is more.
