Hi Lnr,
Cornelius's surname was spelt MITAAL at his marriage.
There's a marriage for a George Cornelius Rennie METAAL in 1891. Was he the son you referred to?

Found this on Papers Past (there are over 180 entries for METAAL):
Otago Daily Times, 21 November 1866, Page 4
SHIPPING.
A Mrs METAAL was a passenger on the Otago travelling from Port Chalmers to the Bluff and Melbourne.
This was the earliest entry I could see.
Do you know when Cornelius METAAL arrived in New Zealand? And did he and Mary RENNIE marry in Otago?
Otago Witness, 8 March 1894, Page 27
METAAL.— On the 1st March 1891, at her residence, Greytown, the beloved wife of George C. R. Metaal; aged 26 years.
Otago Daily Times, 19 January 1918, Page 6
ORR—METAAL. —On December 19, at King Street Congregational Church, by the Rev. G. Heighway, Lieutenant Alfred ORR, N.Z.E.F., youngest son of Alfred Orr, Balfour, to Jessie M„ only daughter of George METAAL, Kingston Crossing.

I found two marriages in Scotland for a Cornelius METAAL:
To Margaret MILLER on 4 December 1829 at Lasswade, Midlothian, Scotland
To Elizabeth GREENWAY on 1 June 1837 at Edinburgh parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland
Was this man the father of your Cornelius, perhaps marrying, then widowed, then marrying again?

Hi Lnr,
You mentioned above that Thomas HOLLANDS died in 1896 and was buried in Allanton Cemetery, Dunedin.
The only Thomas HOLLANDS I can see listed at Allanton Cemetery died on 1 January 1878, age not recorded. In the same plot are interred a Jessie HOLLANDS and a Mary HOLLANDS, same date of death, ages also not recorded, and a Charles HOLLANDS, age 43, died 4 January 1869.
Are they connected?

Got her!
Otago Witness, 11 March 1908, Page 51
DEATHS.
HOLLANDS.—On March 3, 1908, at her residence, Momona, Mary, relict of the late Thomas Hollands.
I suspect that the date of death of 1 January 1878 on the Cemeteries website for Thomas, Jessie and Mary HOLLANDS is spurious. I suggest you contact the Dunedin City council and request a correction for all three individuals.
Jessie died in 1902:
Otago Daily Times, 3 December 1902, Page 4
DEATHS.
HOLLANDS.-On the 1st December, at the residence of her sister (Mrs E. MORELAND), Green Island, Jessie Rennie, the second daughter of the late Thomas Hollands, of Allanton. Private interment.—A. J. Wynn and Hope, undertakers, 36 St. Andrew street.

Hi yes George is Marys Son Cornelius and and Mary married in dunedin, Thanks for the death of mary can now get her death cert.mary and Thomas had 4 ?children a daaughter Jessie Rennie Hollands died 1902 aged 32. Saw the births on Ancestry for possible Cornelius so will chase this up also and saw a mariners satement for a Cornelius Metaal aged 16 b abt 1838 as a ships apprentice so may be him. Maybe he just sailed away and left poor Mary and Thomas Holland has taken him on. How did she get away with marrying the next year( Bigamy)againIf Cornelius was born in Larnark i think his father may have married twice will have to try and take one step at a time Really appreciate your time and effort thanks lnr

Hi Lnr,
You're welcome.
You mentioned a mariners statement on Ancestry for a Cornelius METAAL, a ship's apprentice.
Can you tell us the name of the vessel and its departure point or destination, please? Is it likely that he arrived in New Zealand on this ship?

There are two marriage records, 1865 and 1866, that would be useful to you....occupations, ages, witnesses....anything.
