Hi Folks,
Has anyone else with a UK sub, noticed that we can access/view the Passenger Lists leaving from England but not from Scotland ???
Considering it's a UK sub, I find this to be racist.
Do any others agree as I think it's a disgrace?
Annie
Added To access/view Passenger Lists leaving from Scotland I need a Worldwide Sub!

Perhaps they have not yet obtained permission to access the Scottish passenger lists?
I am in Australia, and of course, Australia is a federation, so each state/territory has their own parliament, system of government, archives, bdms, etc. The organisations like Ancestry FindMyPast and others need to negotiate with each state/territory to gain access to their respective archives/official records/registers etc.

Since when are the English and the Scots classified as different races?
-
Errr .... My Scottish ancestors maintained they were not English ! My Cornish ancestors also maintained they were not English....
Neither of those families spoke English until they had migrated to Australia and discovered it was the language spoken here.
Two Scottish families are in my NSW family tree. First arrived in the 1790s, and second arrived 1800s. The two Cornish ancestors arrived 1840s, tin miners and also mariners!
My Irish ancestors also only learnt to read and write and speak English after arriving in NSW during the gold rushes (1850s/1860s).

Okay, different ethnic groups but not different races.
-
In Australia, discrimination based on ethnicity is labelled 'racist', so the word may have similar broad meaning to our OP too

That's my question!
Seems if you have Worldwide sub for Ancestry you can view the Passenger Lists for immigrants leaving from Scotland but if you only have a UK sub you can only access the Passengers leaving from England both of which are UK.

And quite correct JM :)
I'm not English although born in the UK in a different country called SCOTLAND which I've seen written as Scotland, England ??? ::)
Annie
Added Wales is a different country too within the UK but I've never seen that written as Wales, England (to date) ;D

Yes JM, 'Racist' has broader meanings.....
"Race is the classification of humans into groups based on physical traits, ancestry, genetics or social relations" from link below;

;D
Sometimes I have seen some significant archives from various Australian institutions treated as though they are part of the US of A and therefore Ancestry makes them available via their World Wide sub but not via .com.au or via Heritage plus sub.
JM

Maybe these things need brought to their attention ???
Surely if you subscribe to a country, you expect to see the info. from that country when others can see it ::)

We have to acknowledge that some people aren't very good at geography. I had to chuckle a week or two back when a woman was being interviewed for TV in a street across the Pond and she thought England was in London.

"I've never seen that written as Wales, England"
I have seen it and it is not a new phenomenon. In fact, it goes back to the days when the United States was still a colony. Here's the grave of my 7X g-grandfather, buried in 1732 in Gloucester, Massachusetts. It says he was born in "Wales, England."
-
I'm not saying it hasn't been written but if you use my quote can you please use the quote in full.....
"Wales is a different country too within the UK but I've never seen that written as Wales, England (to date) ;D"
The above with a smiley!

How will the address be IF certain politicians (don't get me started) get their way and "unite" Aust and NZ ::) ::) :o :o :o :o

Interesting article here ac

Presumably because of his chosen national affiliation, golfer Sandy Lyle's "profile" on the PGA Tour had "Born - Shrewsbury, Scotland".

I am puzzled by this thread?
The data sets on Ancestry are:
UK, Outward Passenger Lists, 1890-1960 and
UK, Incoming Passenger Lists, 1890-1960.
The source description of these is:
Board of Trade: Commercial and Statistical Department and successors: Outwards Passenger Lists. BT27. Records of the Commercial, Companies, Labour, Railways and Statistics Departments. Records of the Board of Trade and of successor and related bodies. The National Archives, Kew, Richmond, Surrey, England.
and
Board of Trade: Commercial and Statistical Department and successors: Inwards Passenger Lists. Kew, Surrey, England: The National Archives of the UK (TNA). Series BT26, 1,472 pieces.
No mention of either England or Scotland? ???
-
Furthermore:
When I select Outward Passenger Lists, and using the "Browse This Collection" buttons on the right-hand side, amongst the list of ports I can select are:
Aberdeen
Ardrossan
Ayr
Dundee
Glasgow
Gourock
Greenock
Leith
Lochboisdale
Oban
Stornaway

I've taken the liberty to edit the title of this topic to better describe what records are missing.

I don't have an Ancestry UK subscription.
But if I go to the Ancestry UK Passenger List page, like KG I can see Scottish ports there in the drop down list, top right, and underneath is another drop-down menu of the years and months for which records are available.
Alternatively, if I simply enter 'Scotland' as place of departure I get what looks like thousands of hits.
So I too am puzzled.
-
I am puzzled by this thread?
Not as Puzzled as I am ::)
I was searching (UK sub) Passenger Lists looking for a 'lost' relative only to discover that I could view the lists leaving from England but need a Worldwide sub to view the lists leaving from Scotland.

Are you looking at lists generated by the UK Board of Trade (and subsequent bodies), or lists generated by US?
What is the name of the database that you can't get access to?
As I said I can view them quite happily?
Alternatively, tell us who you are looking for, then we can have a look for ourselves.
-
Some of the US and Canadian Passenger Lists show ports of departure. As KG has enquired, are you trying to view one of these rather than those of the UK Board of Trade? You would need a Worldwide sub to view the US and Canadian lists as they are from Archives in those countries not from Kew.
-
"Some of the US and Canadian Passenger Lists show ports of departure"
Moreover, not all Scottish emigrants sailed from Scottish ports. Mine traveled from Liverpool in 1834.
-
KG,
Sorry I don't understand all the info. you've posted but.....
I was simply checking as follows:
anc.co.uk
SEARCH
Immigration & Travel
Passenger Lists
Only records from the UK and Ireland (Would have travelled from UK IF he did?)
All Collections
I tried to access this (and others);
William Steel
B abt 1876
Dep. 22 Apr 1921 - Glasgow, Scotland
Dest. Montreal, Canada
The pages redirected me telling me I needed a Worldwide Membership (whenever I clicked on any departing from Scotland)!
I see today (having just tried it in order to give you an insight) it's now accessible ??? ::)
I don't know why it was unaccessible last night?
Annie

I have now changed the 'Subject Heading' & will not need an explanation now ;D
Looks like it may have been a 'Blip' at the time ???
Thanks to all who tried to/were willing to help ;)
