I think Rosewell is in Midlothian but not sure

There is a 1901 entry - aged 9mths born Lasswade but before I post details - what else do you know about him (eg) parents names

No entry in East Lothian or with an East Lothian birthplace

Have you checked the Scottish 1911 for him or Scotlands People for a birth

Scotlands People has no births in East Lothian 1898-1902 and the only one in Midlothian is the one mentioned in my reply above

Hi,
Rosewell is approximately 11 miles south of Edinburgh and at one time was a mining village.

This is the 1901 entry I mentioned but you will need to look up the 1911 to see if a daughter b 1902 shows with this same family

21 Carnethie St Lasswade

Hugh Mulligan   33 b Ireland Electric Engine Keeper
Lizzie     23 b Govan Lanarkshire
John    9 Months b Lasswade
Patrick McGarn   59 b Ireland father in law

Hi Kathy

What is the source for the info you have on this John Mulligan? Can't easily see a 1973 death in Florida for him on the Social Security Death Index.

As Carole suggests, just checking on the general searches for the Scottish 1911 doesn't make for an easy match with a Catherine and John Mulligan with the ages you have. Not conclusive though just from general searches.

What do you have on this John to confirm a Scottish birth and his migration to the US around 1925? Have you managed to find him on the US 1930 and 1940 censuses?

Monica  :)

So, from the info on this old post below:

Could one of you nice guys look up Molly for me?  She is being as slippery as a slippery slidey eel.

Details:

Molly (Mary) Ryan, born 1901 Scotland.
Moved to US in 1925 (got that)
Married in 1933 to John Mulligan Brooklyn, NY got that

Parents James Ryan and Mary Bonar, living in Scotland 1901.

Now death - I believe she died in Florida about 1965-70 and I found one entry but with no further info on it for Pasco, FL for 1967.

Any further info would be great, whether she had children or in fact anything.

Thx guys appreciate it a lot.  Been researching Molly for weeks and it is going really slow.

Kathy :)

Is this John and Mary in 1940 in the US? https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KQRY-SZB

This might also be him in 1930 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KQRY-SZB  Occupation electrical helper then mechanic would fit well. If right entry for him, this shows a possible immigration year of 1929 instead of 1925 (Mary Ryan arrived in the US in 1925 from what was mentioned in the other post?).

Shipping manifest for the 'Caledonia' showing arrival for John into NY on 22 Aug 1929. Birth year 1900, birth place Rosewell.

Have you managed to get the 1933 NY marriage entry to check on any of his personal details (like a father's name)?

Can see now the referece to place name Rosewell from John's Petition for Naturalization at the District Court of Eastern District NY on 31 Mar 1930.  On this, his date of birth is given as 1 Jul 1900 at Rosewell, Scotland. Spouse Mary B.

His death details are from 1983, not 1973:

John Mulligan
SSN 052-01-3230
Last Residence:    33570 Ruskin, Hillsborough, Florida, USA
B. 1 Jul 1900 and D. Mar 1983
State (Year) SSN issued: New York (Before 1951).

In additon, the Florida Death Index gives his specific death date on 10 March 1983. It also includes a middle name for him of Joseph.

Expanding now on that 1929 shipping manifest. He gives his father as contact in the UK:

Mr Hugh Mulligan of 16 Louisa Square, Rosewell.

He gave his US contact as his aunt in Brooklyn, a Mrs Bridget Herrity.

Carole's census entry for 1901 will hopefully help you expand his family further.

Hi Monica, my original source for John Mulligan is that he was married to my great aunt Mary Ryan, both emigrated to the US, she in 1925. They had 2 children(*). I am trying to trace the girls forward, but also Mulligan back to Scotland.
Your john is indeed the John Mulligan of Rosewell.thank you.
Tell me, how do you trace social security numbers, say, of the daughters? Is there a website? Thank you all for helping

Hi Kathy

Re following up on the children of Betty and Joan, best to check on the US board and get guidance from there  :)

Re the Scottish side, as always, Scotlands People will be your main source of info. The marriage of John's parents, Hugh Mulligan and Elizabeth McGann looks to have been in 1898, in Lasswade, Midlothian. Carole mentioned earlier the possible birth entry for John Mulligan in 1900. You can either jump forward to try and expand John's family group with his siblings up to the 1911 census or begin working back with the family details on his parents' marriage reg.

In the meantime, possible 1881 for John's mother and her family:

Patrick McGann 35 Shipyard Labourer b. Ireland
Catherine McGann 30  b. Ireland
James McGann 9 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQP2-4RH
Ann McGann 7
Patrick McGann 5
Eliza McGann 3
Margaret McGann 1

Address: 27 Hamilton St., Govan

The 1898 marriage cert will help you confirm parents' names.

Possible death for father Hugh, aged 88, in Lasswade area in 1955. For mother Elizabeth McGann/Mulligan likely death also showing in Lasswade in 1945, aged 66.

Do you know if the daughters are definitely deceased?  If not, their names shouldn't be mentioned here and no Social Security information would be available.  If they are deceased, the Social Security death index is available on Ancestry and familysearch.org.

There's a Mary Mulligan in the same cemetery with the death date of 1966.  https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Mulligan&GSiman=1&GScid=72057&GRid=108669759&  That seems to fit with this entry in the Florida death index - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VVFW-LZC  The middle initial R may stand for Ryan.
