I am trying to find any information that may be available in NewZealand concerning Henry James born 1836 in Llantood, Pembrokeshire, Wales. Henry was eldest son of William James in the 1851 Census aged 13 yrs. After what is said to have been a difficult time with his new stepmother he ran away to NewZealand. The next we see him is getting married at Masterton in the Wairarapa to IsabellaMcKenzie in 1867. My question is what happened to him in the 15 lost years, how did a young boy get himself to New Zealand ? Fair means or foul?
Your verylearned thoughts on this are very welcome.

Hi Bern,
Do you have a year for him leaving the UK or is it just that he wasn't in the 1861 census if so he could well have been round the age of 20 when he left which in those days was not particularly young to travel to NZ

Thanks Lu and Janette, I am already aware of most of your contributions,
He is only on the 1851 census, can't find anything on '41 and I'm presuming already on his travels by '61. Would it be possible that he was transported to Australia and then moved on to NewZealand on completion??

Hi Bern
I am trying to find any information that may be available in NewZealand concerning Henry James born 1836 in Llantood, Pembrokeshire, Wales. Henry was eldest son of William James in the 1851 Census aged 13 yrs.
If you look at the image of the 1851 census you've quoted from above, you'll see that it was William's son Thomas, who was 13 years and was born at Llantood.
The birthplace of Henry JAMES - aged 15 (in 1851) is given as (what looks like ) "moylgrove"?
Perhaps another check of 1861 might turn up Henry in Wales ... or England ?

Bern ... I understand your question is finding Henry in those missing years ... but there seems to be lots of researchers of this Henry and Isabella JAMES family.
Have you made contact with any of these researchers ?

Bern
You would need to check Australian records for "persons transported" (convicts).

Hello Bern,
It may be helpful to request a look up of the 'Intention to Marry' document concerning Henry James in 1867.
Here is some information:

Lu and minniehaha, thanks as always for your help and suggestions. I have been in contact with one of the researchers , a direct descendant of Henry James and they have not had any luck on the missing years. I was just trying to come at the problem from a different angle.
Once again many thanks for your interest.
