Hi I am hoping someone can help, I am trying to trace the Birth/Baptism of George Warter. His marriage to Margaret Glover at St George Chapel Hyde Park Mayfair Corner of Westminster London England in 1748 says he is of St Catherine's by the Tower London but I can't find him there. I think he was probably born around 1720. Thanks heaps for any help

No help on finding his baptism but he appears to have married Mary Weller in 1739..."George Warter, mariner of St Katherine's, bachelor, and Mary Weller, ditto, spinster"
And a George Warter of St Catherine's was apprenticed to Jeremiah Clarke from 13 July 1732 to 27 May 1748 in the Thames Watermen and Lightermens Binding records.

Hi thanks for your reply. Odd that the marriage to Margaret didn't say widower! Do you know what the apprenticeship was for at sea?

Hi Lisa, the marriage to Margaret didn't state the status of either George or Margaret and the apprentice records are from the Waterman & Lighterman bindings. They generally plied their trade on barges on the Thames.
Of interest is the following baptisms:
Needham Warter, baptised 28 May 1706 at St Dunstans Stepney, s/o George (mariner from Stepney) and Ann
George Warter, baptised 17 Mar 1707, same as above.
George Warter, buried 1 Apr 1708, same as above.
Then at Collegiate Church of St Katherine by the Tower:
Ann Warter, baptised 5 Sep 1723, d/o George and Ann, no other details given
And William Warter, baptised 9 Nov 1718, s/o George and Ann, no other details given, at St Boltoph Aldgate.

Hi Jo thanks so much that's great. That means there must be another George born to George and Ann since George 1707 died in 1708. Looks like the family jumped around a bit.

Do you have a burial for your George to confirm his age?

No that would help I have the name of his children their baptisms and his wife's name and surname. I have been struggling to find anything about him.

There must have been 3 Georges because another died 21 March 1707! Could been George Senior?

Hi Lisa,
Given the phonetics of Warter, I think the following is a really good option:
George Waters, s/o George and Ann, baptised May 1717 at St Boltoph Aldgate (I can't find an image of this online).
And then a burial for George Water, age 67 (b.1717), a waterman from Church Stairs, buried 9 Jan 1784 at Rotherhithe St Mary.
And then a Thomas Waters, s/o George &Ann, baptised 3 Sept 1721 at Collegiate Church of St Katherine's.

Hi Jo are we talking about the same George and Ann as parents? George's last child James was born in 1769 so George must have died when James was young. Thanks heaps that certainly gives me something to work with. Seems odd that George 1717 wasn't published on line anywhere! Georges oldest daughter Sarah Jane Warter married a Mariner Captain John Edwards - Gentleman of Broad Stairs Thanet Kent so the families must have known each other or had a connection somehow.
