Title: Craigend Farm, New Abbey, Kirkcudbrightshire
Post by: ali9270 on Saturday 18 March 17 20:20 GMT (UK)
Looking for the owners/tenants of this now demolished farm in SW Scotland. The earliest date I have is 1673, and I know that the last tenants moved out in 1949. Have quite a few names, but also, quite a few gaps!
One owner was the Scottish architect, Walter Newall, who lived on the family farm for two years, before his death in 1863. He designed many churches, estate buildings, farm steadings and town houses. A famous son of Dumfries and Galloway, but few know of this farm where he lived and died.
Thanks.

Hi, Welcome to Rootschat.  :)

If you already have some information it might be helpful to give an indication of where some of the gaps are that you are looking to fill. That way others do not spend lots of time duplicating effort you have already put in.

To get you started:

According to Freecen William Patterson was the farmer at Craigend at the time of the 1841 census (as always recommend that you look at original documents for yourself)

Thank you both!
1634: Archibald Brown O
1671: Cuthbert Brown O
1673: Gavin Brown O

1763: James Burnett O
1819: still James Burnett, and also Walter Newall O
1834: John Kissock
1841-51: Wm Paterson
1873: Walter Copland O

1901:J and J Murdoch

1942: Mr and Mrs Laidlaw, in their sixties, lived there, no children, neighbour visited them.
1943: FC purchased Mabie Forest
1949: Laidlaws moved out, died there or soon after

c1975: FC demolished house and that of Marthrown of Woodhead within a week of each other.

O = owners, as opposed to tenants, (tenant) farmers, horsemen, ploughmen, housemaids etc

I have names of other people from census records, baptismal records, etc, and as there were many workers employed, assume that these are them.

(And the research all started after some sheep went astray two summers ago!)

Many thanks.
