Hello
Please can you tell me about the smollen and Cosgrove families from Mullingar. A child called Bridget, 19th March 1866, father was Patrick and married Julia Cosgrove. There are some other unknown family members, one was a nun, sister Theckla? who passed in a convent nearby Mullingar. Bridget married John Kelly and went to America. Im not sure where the others went!
many thanks.
This is through a dna match. interesting as im looking for an unknown father.

They also had Julia and Patrick but they are listed as Smullen
Patrick 1868
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1868/03439/2262701.pdf
Julia 1864

Hang on Patrick could be incorrect mother name as Costello

Thank you. Seems the sister Rose, was a nun sister and not a sibling. With a 30 year age gap, probably an aunt. The DNA match with unknown father was conceived/born in Mullingar. Her family are Tipperary/Dublin people. Think these Smollen/Smullen are a paternal match that will lead back to her dad.
I need to build on it more. Please can you translate Julia's certificate. What does it say under Patrick's name, and what is his profession please.
Many thanks for your help.

had a look at the baptisms some very faded including Patrick born 1868 Digur ? so you have to look in the box for parents names in the May period and you will see on the baptism that his mother is Julia Cosgrove not Costello

Patrick seniors occupation was Mile's Man

Hello again
Did something happen in 1854 in Ireland. I have found the marriage of Patrick smollen and Julia cosgrove in Mullingar in feb 1854, yet their first child wasn't born until nearly 10 years later, Julia in 1864.
Also in the marriage register it only states their names. Is there any other way of finding out their parents names, and their ages.
-
Have you looked at baptisms before 1864?
Registration of births only started in 1864 so if the had any children before that they won't have birth Certs.
-
Think this is one in April 1855

Page is damaged.

Thank you Sinnan, I didn't know that. However I should be able to find in the church records though. So hopefully they always lived in Westmeath.
Thanks for the help everyone. you would think with an unusual name like smollen, cosgrove and Julia it would be easier to find them.

To make life even easier there is an index
http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000639821#page/28/mode/1up
-
James 1855
William 1856
James 1859
Anne 1860
Mary 1862
The first James must have died.
-
Gosh, she had a few didn't she. Thought it was strange having such a gap :D
Thanks again, is that index available for all copies? If so how do you get to it please
-
And more here
http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000639822#page/104/mode/1up
Julia 1864
Bridget 1866
Patrick 1868
Thomas 1870
Doesn't look like there was one between Mary 1862 and Julia 1864.

I don't quite understand the question.
Your very lucky to have an index.
With the year and month they should be easy to find in the register.

Thank you for your help and for leading me to another resource that I didn't know was available.
The question is if their marriage record is shown as the original, is there a typed record showing their parents names, or isn't that on certificates in 1854.

Hullo!
My great grandfather was John (S)Mullen(s) b 1831, one of three brothers from Clonmellon, Westmeath. Other brothers were: Thomas and Bryan.
John and Thomas migrated to Australia. A few years after they arrived they changed their name from Smullen to Mullens then Mullen. Oral history says they wanted nothing more to do with those they left behind.
We know Bryan's passage to Australia was paid for, but that he stayed behind and married. Oral history says there was a third brother (Bryan?) who went to USA.
Now Mullingar is not that far from Clonmellon or from Castlepollard/Mayne where the Fagan family who both John and Thomas married into.
The brother's mother was Mary (nee Kelly or Farrelly).
Has this just muddied the waters?
cheers,
Barb

Thanks Barb, I am still dangling in meath, trying to make the pieces fit. I will take what you have offered and go through it all piece by piece. I appreciate all the help. Many Thanks.
Just a thought did you do an Ancestry DNA test Barb by any chance ;D ::)
-
Hi tresario,
I hope that dangling in Meath involves Guinness ;)
Yes, I am on Ancestry DNA and GedMatch (A076749), so we could compare dna...we (S)Mullen(s) here are trying to recreate our dna and have done some work to that effect. I have a dna guru for a cousin who is in charge of the 'lazarus' project for us.
If I knew your details we could try to match the dna. A quick speed read on GedMatch to 5 generations didn't show me anything like your avatar here. Look for Barbara Mullen on ancestry or let me know your details ok.
cheers,
Barb

No but I hope it will lead me to a McGuinness!
This started out as a DNA match.. they don't have gedmatch.Robert Roche. Match him at 25.8 2segments.He is a shared match with my only 3rd cousin match,Greg Ryan who doesn't answer my emails. The person I'm admin for is Bernadette Breen gedmatch A909901
His reply was
what he wrote down -
"My great-grandmother Bridget Smolen (or Smullin) was born in Mullingan in the mid 1800s. She married John Kelly, my great grandfather. They immigrated to the U.S. in the late 1800s and settled in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
Bridget had a sister who became a nun. She went by the name of Sister Theckla. The family was from West Meath. I believe Sister Theckla died in a convent in an adjacent county."
I tried at 7cms and no match, dropped it to 3 and we match! 12.9cms, well not we exactly ::) ;D
Chr Start Location End Location Centimorgans (cM) SNPs

Total of segments > 3 cM = 12.9 cM

Great news robert uploaded to gedmatch A207062.
