Can anyone please decipher the maiden name of my 4xg grandmother please?

Very difficult to decipher Joan.
Am I correct in assuming it is from Scotlands People? If so, you can email them and ask them to re-scan it for you. It may take a couple of days but hopefully it will be clearer.
I have had to do this a number of times and it worked.

Many thanks for that suggestion Dorrie. I'll give it a try.

Under the father's name is his occupation, 'Farm Labourer'. Under mother's name seems to say' 'House Servant'. Hope I'm looking at the right bit.

You are looking at the right bit but it says 'M S XXXXX' where M S stands for Maiden Surname. I agree that a request for a clearer scan is the best way forward.
In full it says
Jane McMillan
M S XXXXX

Hi Thornwood
Thanks for your reply.
Yes you are looking at the right bit, but I thought it was giving his mother's maiden name - as is usually the case. Looked like 'Hannah' to me, but I didn't want to influence anyone else's thoughts.
I have asked Scotlands People for help, as Dorrie suggested.
Many thanks,

Thanks for that josey.
Your reply came in just as I was posting mine!

Just to let you know that I have now received a rescanned copy of the Death Certificate from Scotlands People. The mother's maiden surname is definitely 'Hannah'.
Thanks everyone, especially Dorrie for suggesting I ask for a rescan.

Hope having the name can let you progress ;)
