Hi,
can someone find these 2 people for me?
Alfred Jessop-age 23-born Horncastle?
Kate Jessop-age 22-born Horncastle?
In 1891 they were living at 39 Millgate,Newark with their mother Susan(Mahalah Susan),stepfather John Jessop(aka Chester) and 2 step siblings Rose and Mahalah who by 1901 would be 18 and 11 respectively.
There is a strong probability that they might have stopped using the surname Jessop and reverted to their late father's name of Norton or Lincoln(he was also known by both).
Thanks for any help anyone can give me,
Trisha

There are newspaper reports dated 26th August 1902, Linciolnshire Echo, that could possibly be Alfred:
'Alfred Jessop, 25, stoker of the torpedo boat destroyer Angler, fell overboard off North Berwick yesterday and was drowned. Jessop belonged to Newark.'
Maybe he was at sea for 1901 Census.
-
Royal Navy records give date and place of birth for Alfred Jessop as 1st December 1877, Tattersall, Lincoln. Occupation:labourer.
Date of enlistment:17th June 1897 for 12 years.
-
Hi,
that does sound like him.I wonder where Kate is?
Trisha :)
-
Possible 1901 Census for Kate working as a servant:
56, Albert Street, Newark, Newark upon Trent
Golding Sorrell, age 69, Romford Essex, County Court Bailiff plus his family
Kate A Norton,22, born Scrubb Hill, Lincs
RG13/3197/21
Page 34
Which would match in for the birth of Kate Annie Norton, 1879, Horncastle.
Using GRO index gives mother's maiden name as Trafford, which is Mahala Susan, Kate's mother's maiden name.
Possible marriage for Katie Annie Norton 3rd qtr 1902 Newark to Charles Robert Chambers
-
If that is Kate and the correct marriage, there are army records for Charles Robert Chambers,Sherwood Foresters (1st Battalion): records of officers' service.
Details on the records give date of marriage: 20th August 1902, Newark to Kate Annie Norton.
Charles' date and place of birth: 28th August 1878, Bingham, Nottinghamshire. Was commissioned from the ranks 9th October 1914.

Hi
,I think that's her.Thanks. :) :)
I've been trying to find them on the 1881 census to find them with their birth father,Alfred Lincoln Norton and Mahalah Susan, but I've never had any luck. However it would now seem my grandmother Rose had 2 siblings I didn't know about.

1881 census Vessels Dorset
Alfred Norton age 25 born Newark Nottinghamshire, married, 2nd Captain ----top?
gives him a birth year of 1856, so is this the father?
-
Hi,
no unfortunately it not him.Alfreds father was called Alfred Lincoln Norton ,born c 1845 in Coningsby. He was a Machineman/Agricultural labourer around the Wildmore fen/Thornton le fen area of Lincolnshire. He died prematurely in 1886.
I've never been able to find his exact birth because on the 1851 census(which gives his birth place as coningsby)it says he's adopted-I think probably within the family but I might be wrong. It's not helped that this family keep changing their surname .They have 4 different ways :-
Norton
Lincoln
Norton Lincoln
Lincoln Norton
It caused so much trouble as you can imagine and might be why I cant find Alfred and Mahahah in 1881.They married BTW in 1877.
Is it possible you could find anything else about Kate and her husband and any children they might have had?I had a look on FreeBMD but couldn't find any after 1911.
Thanks so much for the help you've given me on this.
Trisha :) :)

TrishaG - Apologies I may have posted information about the wrong the
Charles Robert Chambers
The info. I originally posted was for a Charles Robert Chambers who was
born 1879 in Grantham Lincolnshire
his fathers name Thomas (mother possibly Rebecca GARRARD) married 1861
Looking at the info. from sgf28 the Charles Robert Chambers that married Kate Annie Norton was
born 1878 in Bingham Nottinghamshire
So I have edited my original post by removing the information as not to confuse matters :)
-
Hi,
the info about Alfred and Mahalah and her remarriage is correct.
I too couldn't find any children. The only likely looking one was a Charles Chambers born in Newark in 1903.Can't prove it though.
Slightly confused(it's been a long day-lol)-do you mean that the info about the will is correct? If it is that's very interesting.Unlike any of my relatives on that side at that time they moved completely away from their birth place.I'm presuming it's to do with the army.
I wonder where he lived in 1901.I wonder this because perhaps they didn't live far from her mother in Eldon Street Newark.
Thanks for the brilliant info
Trisha

Hi,
that definitely looks like him.I'ld be very grateful for the extra info ,thanks. He appears to have been an extraordinary man,I wonder what he got the DCM and MC for?In amongst all this was there an obit for Kate at all,it might give any extra info about her past and give a clue as to why I've never heard of her before and if they had any children.
Thank you so much for all your help in this it's very much appreciated.

Hi,
sorry I havn't got back sooner, had relatives over.
Thank you so much for looking up all this info.I wonder if like a lot of people in the Raj they sent their children back to England to school and that's why they don't register on the 1911 census with their parents. I can't think who Kathleen Veronica is for the moment.I do have the surname Vickers in my family tree and I'll have to see where it fits in.
