Yes, she was born in Dumfries. Her husband was born in Redcastle. My other line comes from Cupar, Fife.

There is much information available here on your wife's ancestors if she is interested.

She is certainly interested, her gt grandfather was John Kavanagh who moved to Liverpool from Cheshire,he was 21 when his parents emigrated, its only recently we decided to widen the Kavanagh search from the gtgtgrandparents,
Her great grandparents were John Kavanagh and Ellen Sullivan

Ah, so John didn't come with them. I have found the deaths and notices for Thomas, Lawrence, James and Joseph, and wondered why I couldn't find John. Can't find William either. Just found death notices for John and Margaret. As it is 2:50am it is time to sleep. Will post some information, later today.

I started the day looking at cemetery indexes and funeral notices on TROVE. It all proved so interesting that I have found myself engrossed in the search, all day.

I have attached a PDF hoping you will be able to save it, as the WORD doc ended up 8 pages long.

The focus of the research was on Lawrence, who arrived in Australia before John and Margaret, and his family.

His marriage: 698/1861 Lawrence KAVANAGH to Eliza MACLEOD SYDNEY

The task is made easier when folk place death and funeral notices.

I found a newspaper add placed by a Lawrence seeking to find his brother Thomas who had arrived on the FORTUNE in 1851. I can't find the passenger list.

Also, I have a birth for a Sophia, but can't find a marriage or death.

I'll look at another brother, tomorrow. I think Thomas may have married in 1856.

Hi,
We assume now that my wife's gt grandfather John was probably the only one who stayed behind, there was also Catherine born 1850 but she died in 1851 in Cheshire
Johns son Lawrence born in 1875 was my wife's grandfather,my wife's maiden name was Catherine Kavanagh and she was the youngest of 10
As I said, the info you sent this morning is amazing and we can't thank you enough

Today I worked on Thomas - son of John and Margaret.

I was unable to find a marriage for him. Either it is hiding from me in the NSWBDM data base, it wasn't registered or he married prior to his arrival. Anything is possible.

I wasn't 100% sure it was the right family for Thomas, but a few moments ago I made the link between an address in the death notice of a child with father Thomas and with the address in one of the death notices for his greater family members.

He died in 1880 and his family moved to Cootamundra, NSW.

I have included death notices from the Ryerson index. https://www.ryersonindex.org/

This index lets you see what is available, but not to see the actual notices. There are people on this site who are able to locate and post them on here. I am not able to do so.

Where no burial sites are shown, it is because I was unable to find them. I have provided information on Petersham Catholic Cemetery which will explain why there are no sites available for the folk buried there.

If you have time to spare, you will find references to Thomas on TROVE, pre 1880.

Hi jamjar
I've searched for a marriage for Thomas over here then realised,if he emigrated in 1851 he would've only been 15yrs old as he was born in Dublin in 1836.
Title: Re: Kavanagh
Post by: Jamjar on Saturday 25 March 17 08:26 GMT (UK)
You are right, of course. I think I may have interpreted the message incorrectly:

18 December 1858
THOMAS or MARGARET BURNS, from Seacombe, Cheshire, or any person to whom they may be
known, who sailed from Birkenhead in the ship Fortune, for Sydney, seven years ago, be kind enough to address to your brother, LAWRENCE KAVANAGH, Sydney Post Office.

Would it be that Margaret Burns is his sister and Thomas his b-in-law?

Did I see the Kavanagh's and Burns' living at the same residence on the UK 1841 census?

Attached is a PDF of Sarah - daughter of John and Margaret.

I don't know if I mentioned but NSWBDM online registers are restricted to births up to the current day and month to 1917, deaths to 1987 and marriages into the 60s I think.

As a result of the cut off dates you will see, in what I have found, that there can be a death without a birth. It gets very difficult to find folk and that is where death notices, cemetery indexes and headstone inscriptions, often come in handy.

Hi jamjar
Yes there was a burns family at the same address in demean street on the 1841 census, but there was no Thomas burns listed, but that's not to say he could be a relative living elsewhere, but once again you've come up trumps with so much info
Thanks again

A quick look at NSWBDM and Trove suggests that Margaret Byrnes married William Duffy in 1878. In one of his funeral notices he is from Riley Street, as were the Kavanagh's, and John Burnes is his stepson.

Hi jamjar
Does that possibly mean Margaret has remarried?
Title: Re: Kavanagh
Post by: Jamjar on Saturday 25 March 17 15:39 GMT (UK)
Yes, I believe it does. However, judging by the age she is at death and William too, she cannot be the one Lawrence was referring to, if it was he who put the add in the paper. Also, there is a Margaret born to John and Margaret here in 1860 something and this is who I believe it is. I'll need a fresh mind when looking at this one.

Also, I am sure that I have done a lookup at Waverley Cemetery for Joseph - son of John and Margaret - and Elizabeth. I think it was related to EGGINS on the headstone. I will search Rootschat to see if I can find who else is looking it them.

I've spent the day working on the line of Joseph and Elizabeth. Elizabeth did remarry to a cad and it explains why she died as Elizabeth Ousley, but is buried with Joseph as his wife Elizabeth Kavanagh. Poor Joseph came to a very sad end.

One of their daughters, Mary Amelia, married an Ambrosoli and they had a son who died as a POW, in WW2. There is a photo of him in his military file. He enlisted as Allan Ambrose KAVANAGH, but his birth is registered as Ambrosoli.

To see the file go to: https://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/SearchNRetrieve/Interface/SearchScreens/BasicSearch.aspx

You just need Allan Kavanagh in the 'Keywords' box. When the list is shown click on the curved symbol to the right.

Of note is that Ambrosoli is a very uncommon name here, and if you go to https://www.whitepages.com.au/residential, and type the surname you will see that there are a few who you would be able to make contact with.

Hi Jimmy, I have gone as far as I can with Joseph's line.

It would be worth a look on the NAA site as I think you will find some war records.

Also, death notices can be useful as they often name children. SMH has a pay to use online archive where you may find some of the notices I have listed. I did the free search for some of them without success. I don't know if it is more successful is you pay for access.

Have been working on the 'Dimond's' Mary and Patrick. Patrick was on the Severn with the Kavanagh's.

There is quite a bit on TROVE ON Patrick.

Just prior to shutting down the computer I found a grandchild of Mary and Patrick in Western Australia. His mother died over there also.

Someone has been researching the family as the WW2 military files are available for viewing on the NAA. You can view those of "Robert Walter Dimond", "Peter Anthony Dimond" these two are brothers. "Ray Dimond" is their cousin.

Hoping to have this one completed, tomorrow.

By the way my free access to SMH is from 1955 - Feb 1995 and from 2006-current so there is an annoying gap in the middle  >:(

However this free-to-search site covers all these years and more and not only the SMH but The Age and Illawarra Mercury and community newspapers
http://newsstore.fairfax.com.au/apps/newsSearch.ac?sy=nstore

BUT I have such mixed success with finding items on here - not sure why - I must be missing something fundamental  ???

Still waiting for a light bulb moment ...   (yes it will be something simple and obvious  ;D )

Mary's family is a large one indeed.

On Trove you will find information on the two brothers in Western Australia. It appears they weren't worried about breaking the law.

Did I mention that when you search for a name on Trove be sure to put the name in between quotation marks " ". It narrows the search. Same when searching on National Archives.

Here you will find the list of immigants on the Severn. Last two columns for the Dimonds and Kavanaghs. You will see that the Kavanaghs were coming out to Thomas.

Hi Jimmy,
I try to visit NSW SRO about every 3 or 4 weeks to take photographs of probate packets, divorces etc for rootschatters.

I suspect that there are dozens of relevant probates for your family.  If you order them by priority I will fit them in when I can.  (You can just pm me with your wish-list).

  https://www.records.nsw.gov.au/archives

Since they have "upgraded"  ::) their website, it is easier to type into the main search box on home page
   Dimond probate
etc and then select the relevant ones.

Or can also use keyname search for other info http://indexes.records.nsw.gov.au/keyname.aspx

Hi Ros
To be honest,I wouldn't know where to start,we were trying to find if my wife had any living relatives in aus from her great grandfathers brothers and sisters and we're now building a fantastic family tree of her family in Australia which is far in excess of what we were expecting, although as yet we are still hoping to make contact with relatives, this journey is fantastic
We really can't thank you ( and jamjar )enough
Regards
Jimmy

Now that Jamjar's found some current surnames for your family, you could check whitepages
https://www.whitepages.com.au/residential
and perhaps write a letter to those with appropriate initials.  Luckily the surnames aren't too common.

You could also try facebook and linkedin for the children mentioned in the death notices.

And later when you have had time to absorb it all you may find some probates etc that you want.

regards,
   Ros

Jimmy, Margaret - daughter of John and Margaret - did arrive on the ship Fortune, but in 1853.

She was with husband Thomas Burns age 26 and sons Patrick age 1 and James age 2. She was 19.

Other Burns on the ship were James 24 and Jane 22.

It's been a battle sorting her family as she married three times.

More on her, tomorrow.

ADDED: I've removed the PDF of Margaret's line, as I am typing the notices, put up by Ros, into the correct places in the document.

Have just finished the tree of Margaret and Thomas Burns. There are some areas that would need the purchase of certificates in order to be sure the information was correct. I've made notes when things were are bit iffy.

There are two PDF, as I had to take some photos out due to the PDF being larger than what we are allowed to upload here. The photos go in the section where you will see a headstone for the Alewood's.

Hi Jamjar and Ros
It’s been quite a while since I’ve been in contact but I’ve tried so many avenues to make contact with any relatives of the Kavanagh clan,June Bigham daughter got in touch but didn’t have any information that helped,I’ve written to newspapers and various funeral directors without much luck, although I’m waiting to hear( hopefully) from Mary Kavanaghs great grandchildren,The Dimonds,
Again,I’ll let you know if I get lucky
I know I wouldn’t have gotten anywhere without your help
So thank you both once again
Eternally grateful.
