Can anyone help in discovering ancestors of Thomas Hodgkiss born about 1850 in Madeley. Later resident in Kemberton. Thanks
-
His Baptism was 23/12/1849 Madeley, Shropshire. Parents John & Eliza Hodgkiss.
On the 1851 Census they lived at Fosters Row, Madeley.
John born 1815 Hodnet and Eliza born 1816 High Ercall

Eliza's baptism 8/1/1815 High Ercall, Parents George & Ann Ferrington.

Many thanks Ellenmai and JJen that is a great help. I had been a bit stuck before this with the huge numbers of Hodgkiss families in the area!

Looking at the 1861 it would appear there are more children 'born' to John and Eliza
John Hodgkiss 48
Eliza Hodgkiss 45
Jane Hodgkiss 18
John Hodgkiss 16
Ellen Hodgkiss 13
Thomas Hodgkiss 11
William Hodgkiss 8
Martha Hodgkiss 6
Mary A Hodgkiss 3
RG 9 Piece 1858 Folio 53 Page 31
There is a burial of a Thomas Hodgkiss -
Thomas Hodgkiss
Birth year - 1849
Death year - 1850
Death date ? ? 1850
Age 1
Burial date 21 Feb 1850
Burial place Madeley
Denomination Anglican
County Shropshire
My concern is, was Thomas actually the son of John and Eliza ???
There doesn't appear to be Shropshire births for (as per 1861)
William Hodgkiss 8
Martha Hodgkiss 6
Mary A Hodgkiss 3
Perhaps John and Eliza 'adopted' these children.
Apologies for putting a 'spanner in the works' but there is nothing worse than following the incorrect line.

Do you have Thomas' marriage cert? Who did he marry and when?
If not perhaps you could post your link to Thomas Hodgkiss which we can then try to follow (that's if you would like us to do so :) )

On the 1901 Census Eliza a widow is living with Thomas and his wife Annie in Jubilee Row, Kemberton
1881 at Cuckoo Oak, Sutton Road, Madeley, Thomas age 21& Parents
1871 at 20 Hills lane, Madeley Thomas is age 11.
1861 at Hills lane, Madeley

The earliest ancestor that I know is mine, is Thomas at Jubilee Row, and from this I understand that he was 51 in 1901 and from Madeley. I would be grateful for any suggestions of how to solve the puzzle or even possible explanations of the discrepancies. There was a suggestion in the family that he might have been from Wem, but I don't believe there is any fact to support this. ALL THEORIES GRATEFULLY RECEIVED!

On the 1901 Census Eliza is living with Thomas her son, her place of birth is High Ercall, Shropshire as it is in the other Census info I have given you. That's why I think it's the same family as you are looking for.

Have found the above births recorded with the surname Hotchkiss mmn Ferrington.
All the census information found indicates that Eliza is the mother of Thomas but as there is only one birth for a Thomas Hodgkiss in 1849, Madeley (no mmn recorded) and then a death/burial in Madeley of a one year old Thomas Hodgkiss in 1850 I do question where is the birth record for Thomas Hodgkiss living with John and Eliza. It would appear that the birth records for the other children with John and Eliza were registered with mmn Ferrington.
I would be tempted to purchase the birth and death cert as mentioned above to confirm or rule out this Thomas.

Hello,
I am a senior who resides in Nova Scotia Canada. This may mean nothing to you, but on my Family Tree I have a Mary Hodgkiss born about1834 in Dawley, nr. Shifnal. On Dec. 27, 1855, she married Thomas Humpherson. These are my ggrandparents. This information may or may not be of interest to you, but thought I would pass it on anyway.

Many thanks Doris. I can't say that I have any clues of how, or if, Mary fits into my tree, but all jigsaw pieces may eventually give us a bigger picture. Do you have Mary's father's name or names of any witnesses present at the wedding?
-
The wedding took place in Shiffnal.
Thomas's' father was John, both were Colliers.
Mary Hodgkis father was Thomas Hodgkis occ Labourer
Witnesses Daniel Humpherson & Jane Robinson
