Title: ORKNEY or ORKNAY
Post by: squirejay on Saturday 25 March 17 15:55 GMT (UK)
My 3x GG mother was Jean Orkney, born about Aug 1757, and married Robert Crow in Coldingham, Berwickshire on 14th May 1798.
She was the daughter of Patrick Orkney and Mary Martine and had siblings
John (1743), William (1746) and Margaret (1750).
Patrick and Mary married on 16th Nov 1742 at Coldingham.
I am interested in trying to find any of her father’s ancestors, for either spelling, as I have found several births, in either Chirnside or Coldingham from about 1680 to 1750 but am confused which child belongs to which father. Mothers’ name would be a bonus.
Unfortunately, this family suffered from a lack of imagination in the naming of their offspring!

This isn't strictly relevant to your query, but I see you are interested in Hopper in the Greenlaw area. I believe I'm descended from a John Grahamslaw who was a "servant to Robert Hopper of Edenmouth, Ednam" in the 1750s and -60s. That's not far from Greenlaw as the crow flies.

my husband is descended from Robert Crow/Jean Orkney.     They had a daughter Jane Crow who married Thomas Hopper.   So thanks for the additional information.

I have twigged who you are SquireJ.    Not been on Rootshat for a few years.

I see you have Goodfellow as one of your surnames. Any connection with Jedburgh?

I haven't found any of my Goodfellow in Jedburgh.   They were born, died in the Maxton, Makerstoun Area.   My Gt Grandfather was John Goodfellow m. Hannah Johnstone.  His Father was William Goodfellow  m   Jane Hunter  who was son of John Goodfellow m.  Ann Swanston.

I came to a dead end with John G. m  Ann Swanston.    He was born in Bowden, Roxburghshire but cannot find a birth on the IGI.

OK, thanks, false alarm. I have Wight, Thomson and Richardson ancestors in Maxton. The Goodfellows of Jedburgh weren't ancestors, just rellies by marriage.

just come back, I know it is 5 or 6 years since this string was last used,  to look at my relative Jean Orkney/Orknay, and find that one of her descendants Alison DARRIE married a John GOODFELLOW in Coldstream on 24 Jan 1872 . They went on to have at least 8 children!

Alison was the daughter of George Darrie and Margaret Cowe, and died in Jedburgh in 1911 age 62 ref 792 / 1. don't have the credits at the moment for accurate dates.
The Darrie's are related through the Bains and Hoppers. Thomas Hopper (1800 - 1879) being my 5 x Gr Grand Father
