Hi :) Not been on here for a few years due to family issues, so a bit rusty with the old genealogy lark but I'm back at it again now and have a brick wall I can't think my way around! I need to find a marriage c1837 ish for Richard Bell b. 1816 Dumfries, Occ Tailor. Wife Mary ??? They had a son Richard in 1839 b. Dumfriesshire who seems to be their first child from looking at the 1841 census, so guessing marriage also Dumfriesshire but can't find anything that seems to make sense! Can anyone help me please?

Hi ,
Is this the family in 1851 ?

Some contributed entries on the IGI shows that Richard's wife was Mary Gunning :-\

There is a marriage old parish register for a Richard Bell to a Mary Gunzeon 11/3/1839 Dumfries ..possibility ...as Gunning appears to be her maiden name ..

Margaret Bell age 17,Charles 14,Janet 13,William 8,John 3
Reuben Child age 23 b England lodger

"You could try getting the birth certificate for John Bell born 1858 and that should have the date of marriage for the parents "
Actually, that information was not given in the years from 1856 to 1860...

Some trees for the family have John Gunning Bell as born 1855 , and there is a match on the Statutory Records for Dumfries Dumfries(shire).
If that is the correct John , that record could answer many questions.

It looks like it all fits, thanks so much ev and rosie17 ! Looks like Mary must have been widowed by 1861 and I have son Richard b.1839 living as a lodger in Manchester and following his father's profession of Tailor probably working for his Uncle Charles Gilles Bell who lived next door, employer of 6 men & 1 boy. I'd love to know why lots of the family moved to Lancashire from Scotland. If anyone has ideas I'd be delighted to hear them!
