Jane, that's asking quite a lot for people to look up all those names, especially as you have Smiths!  Have you tried finding them in the censuses to see what they give as their occupations, that might give you a starting point?

Hello Groom,

I am not from Great Britain and can't see any censuses because I am not a Member of Ancestry.com or other genealogy sides.

Hi Jane

Am I reading your post correctly?

You start by saying that Herbert Edgar b1866 was the son of Edward Smith and Elizabeth Fuller.
You follow that by saying that Herbert Edgar's mother was Amelie Pattenden! :)

Looks like it was Amelie/Amelia (from GRO Index) so who was Elizabeth Fuller?

Name:                           Mother's Maiden Surname:
SMITH, HERBERT  EDGAR     PATTENDIN     Order
GRO Reference: 1867  M Quarter in REIGATE UNION  Volume 02A  Page 142

From the 1881 Census we find the following occupations:

Father Edward - a Gardener
Herbert Edgar - a Butcher
Brother Edward - a House Painter
Brother Robert - a Carpenter

They don't sound like Romany occupations do they?

Just picking one name out of there:  Herbert Edgar Smith

He married Jessie Cooper on Christmas Day 1889 at St Paul's Church Thornton Heath. He was a 23 year old butcher from Upper Norwood and his father Edward was a Gardener. Jessie's father was also a gardener. So no travellers there.

What makes you think any of the family were travellers?

Posts crossed Giggsy - as you say, no gypsy connection as far as the records show.

Yes , I've already posted a Post on this family but i did a new one with all my known ancestors on my maternal side .

Giggsy, Elizabeth Fuller is the Grandmother of Herbert Edgar Smith, she was born 1802 in Worth i think .

Groom ,

I don't really think that they were Romanies or Travellers but I want to make clear if they were, or not . Smith , Cooper and Mills are common Romany surnames but also surnames of the non-Gypsy community .

Jane, can I suggest that, as a start, you pick out one or two names and post on a thread in the county they came from? As you can see nearly 90 people have looked at this thread, but only 2 replied, I think there are too many names there for people to follow.

Joseph Mills b1826 (father of John b1854) was a Woodman.

Two of his sons Enock b1870 and Stephen b1872 were Ag Labs.

Hello groom and Giggsy,

Groom, Yes I think I 've posted too many names and Information to follow.

Giggsy, Thanks for your help, there are some interesting occupations but non of them shows a romany link.

I've found the Sister of Letitia Goddard my GGGG grandmother, Jemima Goddard a Shoebinder. Both of them are the daughters of William Goddard from West Ilsley and Mary Hitchman from Wantage . What was Williams Occupation? William was born c.1793 in West Ilsley Mary Hitchman c.1796 in Wantage , What were the names of their parents ? I don't think that they were Gypsies but it would be something new.

Jane
