Hi All
I have a marriage in Bray,Wicklow Ireland of John Carroll to Elizabeth Dixon 1867
its a Catholic church but the Dixons may be Church of England
Elizabeth states parents as William Dixon and Elizabeth Buckley of Chester and in the remarks column the priest has written what looks like ''spouse Bray outsider''
marriage 236 here
http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000633720#page/22/mode/1up
Elizabeth died 1892 age 47 ? born circa 1845
John Carroll was born in Bray in 1841
interestingly on the 1901 Census of Dublin a nephew William Dixon age 22 born circa 1879 a stoker born Liverpool is staying with the family he is Church of Ireland
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Dublin/Arran_Quay/Great_Western_Square/1334801/
would like help locating Elizabeth's birth or parents marriage.
any help greatfully appreciated

Hi Carole
thank you very much for your efforts much appreciated.
that census info is so close to what i am looking for who knows some one could have taken up the mothers maiden name wrong either in England or Ireland.
The only info i have on Elizabeths marriage is the church record however all Irish civil certs before the 100 yr rule will be released free sometime in the near future, most are available at present except marriages before 1880 which i am waiting on it will be interesting to see what occupation Elizabeth gives for her father as her husband is an engine man.

Fingers crossed ;D
William is an engineer in 1841 but died Dec qtr 1851 aged 41
Can't find Elizabeth in 1861 at the moment
-
Hi Carole,
1861 2864/15/23
Green Lane, Barton upon Irwell
Henry Little 56 yrs
Alice Little wife 21 yrs
Elizabeth Dickson boarder 16 yrs
Heywood
-
Full marks for spotting that one Heywood. Sister Alice married Henry in 1859
-
Henry and Alice married at Manchester Cathedral 1859 - witnesses John Henry and Hannah Dixon.
Marriage
7th March 1858 - Cathedral
Henry Dixon father William Engine Driver and Hannah Simmons
I do hope this is the right family. I can't find suitable births :-\
-
Henry was somewhat economical with the truth about his age when he married. Aged 49 on 1859 marriage cert - aged 56 in 1861 ::)
-
I have to apologise to you both but i just realised if you are not Catholic you have to get baptised in order to marry in the Catholic church, with this in mind i looked for a baptism for an adult Elizabeth Dixon and found what appears to be her aged 22 on 31 May 1867 getting baptised in Bray dtr of William Dixon and Elizabeth BURTELL/BURTELY.
BAPTISM 1216 HERE

I think that surname is Birtley/Birtle - when I was looking for mmn on the GRO site I came across at least one of the Dixon births with that mmn but discounted it. I need to go back and have another look
-
That's a great find Dathai :)
-
1851 shows John aged 13 b Newton Le Willows which came under Warrington RD at that time
Births June qtr 1838
John Dixon Warrington 20 777
GRO search - mmn = Birtles
FS
Name William Dixon
Spouse's Name Elizabeth Birtles
Event Date 27 Jan 1834
Event Place Warrington,Lancashire,England
-
This is great - well done Carole now ;)
-
There is a freebmd entry Gt Boughton Sept qtr 1845 - unnamed female child surname Dixon - mmn Birtles and an Elizabeth Dixon b 1840 died 1840 Warrington mmn Birtles
No death for the 1845 child and Elizabeth was born 1845??
-
I suppose speaking with an English accent to an Irish priest Birtles would sound like Burtell.
I have been through the Bray parish register looking for Dixon siblings and did not find any with same parents though there are plenty of Dixons in the same area.
One man i found was Henry Dixon and MaryAnne Whelan who had oodles of children from the 1860s to the 1870s but could not find a marriage for them,i looked up one of the childrens births on the civil register and Henry Dixon was a train driver maybe just coincidence.
thank you both for all your help.
