Title: Find My Past renewal e-mail
Post by: Retriever on Saturday 01 April 17 13:38 BST (UK)
I didn't get a renewal e-mail this year, just an e-mail thanking me for renewing and that the money had been taken.

I queried it with FindMyPast but they are insistent they always send out renewal e-mails and that the fault lies at my end. Having checked my inbox and spam I dispute that and anyway I have had other
e-mails from them with no problem.

Is it just me?

My renewal email came through a couple of months ago with no problems.

I had something similar last year with no notification, they attempted to take the subscription but the card was out of date. They then had the cheek to instruct me to up date my card and I e-mailed them saying it would have been nice to have some notification they were taking the money in the first place. After a few e-mails bouncing back and forth we agreed on a reduced subscription. Even though I was initially very annoyed I was quite pleased I got a reduction.  ;D

I had a similar problem earlier on in the year.

I phoned and negotiated a reduced sub they gave me a code to put in when I renewed and they said they'd made a note of it and taken off the auto renew tick. A couple of days later I had an email telling me that my sub had been taken at the full price!!

When I phoned them up and told them what they'd done I was informed I'd get a refund and to just go ahead on the given day and renew with the code for reduced sub which I did.

They refunded the amount within 7 days.

I told them I wasn't impressed to firstly not being sent a reminder and then to receive a note saying it had been taken out. Just got an apology.

I too didn't get a renewal reminder and only found out when FindMyPast send me an email to say they couldn't take the money as the card number had expired!

Surely the easiest way is to make sure that the automatic renewal box is unticked? If it is ticked they could argue that you've given them permission to renew and they don't need to remind you. If it is unticked and they renew they are in the wrong.

That used to be easiest, but last year I had an automatic renewal despite I had checked, and the box WAS unticked.   :o
I have a secret suspicion there has been a take over by a company less scrupulous than before.....

That's what happened to me, which is why I asked when I got a quote for reduced sub I enquired about the auto renewal and was told they'd remove it - obviously that didn't happen.
You need to keep a check on these large web sites constantly it all seems to have changed over past few years.

Many thanks for your responses, it seems I'm not alone. So much for their "the fault lies at your end".

The e-mail usually arrives 2/3 weeks before the renewal date, giving plenty of time to decide whether to renew or not.

I will untick the box.

The easiest way is to remove your credit card information from your account profile. It does not affect your subscription and there is no way FindMyPast can 'accidentally' automatically renew your subscription. I do this all the time with FindMyPast - when I want to renew I just enter my credit card information and then after I have a new sub I delete the card info on my profile.

Hi sami, just one thing. Do you still get the renewal e-mail if you withdraw your card details?

I'm thinking of the loyalty discount.

Great idea, so I thought I would do it straight away before it slips my mind.

I have searched everywhere, and the only thing I can find is "update card details", but not the card details originally entered to delete them. ???

Sometimes I get renewal emails from them but it has always been very inconsistent, even when they had my credit card details. Used to wonder if it was because I am in Canada.

The only loyalty discount ever offered to me was 10% off. I can sometimes do better than that by waiting for special offers but it always seems that I can get the 10% off with them even if they don't have my details on file.

When I go to my account page there is an 'Update payment card' section. If I click on that it shows my credit card information - in my case it's all blank, but I could enter the information and then click on the 'Update your card details'.

You should be able to see your own credit card information there and make changes to it.

Will be removing my card details.

Thanks Sami. I feel they should be there, but mine is all blank too.

My card details are blank as well, but I've got the renewal box ticked. I don't remember removal the details, so I guess FindMyPast did.

I think it's not as simple as merely unticking the auto-renewal box. This was discussed recently on thread about 1 month for £1 offer. I always unticked the box but when I signed back in and checked I would find it ticked again. At the moment it's staying unticked but I don't trust it and check EVERY time I sign in...

Can't explain why yours is blank but in the past I would have taken that to mean that the information is already deleted and FindMyPast does not have access to it.

Now I'm not so sure - gave it a try and entered my credit card information with an incorrect expiry date just to see what would happen. Much to my surprise it updated but does not show me what is actually on file. So now they have my slightly incorrect credit card information which should foil them from automatically renewing my subscription. But obviously they have changed the way they store information and how you access it.

Good thing I checked ;)

Now I suspect they still have your details, you just can't see them. Maybe they started doing that for security.

My card expires anyway in a couple of months, so they won't be able to renew it next January.

I simply make a note in my diary to check just before any renewal- even though I know that I've  unticked the renewal box.

I didn't get the e-mail regarding renewal either and because our credit cards had been changed by the bank for security reasons (although they said there hadn't been a problem with the cards!), FindMyPast couldn't automatically renew.  I had ticked the box to stop automatic renewal but it had been re-ticked, so I unticked it again - so anyone else with this problem they are not the only ones.  Fortunately, I realised my subscription had run out the next day when I wanted to use FindMyPast, but to renew on line I didn't get my loyalty reduction, so I rang FindMyPast and explained that I hadn't received the renewal e-mail and wanted to renew but as a long standing customer I wanted the loyalty bonus.  The lady I spoke to said that I couldn't renew over the 'phone as they were not allowed to take credit card details  ::) but I could renew on line.  When I said that would mean I would have to pay the full price, she told me that if I did it straight away she would look out for my renewal and refund the difference between the full price and the loyalty price, so I did and she did although it did take a few days for the refund to reach my credit card account.  I did e-mail the lady and thank her as she had been so helpful and it was not her fault that renewal e-mails are not being sent out properly.

I have just been into my account and the auto renewal has been ticked, so I've unticked it and confirmed 'update details' it then takes you to a page saying do you really want to do that and I've said 'yes'. I closed it all down and gone back in again and for the moment it's still unticked.

Now that it's been said that it comes on again I shall check each time I go into the site.

As I said before you have to watch these big companies they are not in for the benefit of our health just their bank balances!

I've not had a problem with non-reenewal and think this is the crucial stage. If it hasn't come up then the process is unfinished.

I'd be interested if anyone could categorically say they've had a problem after seeing it.

So guess what, I went into my account and tried to untick the automatic renewal box - which I had previously had unticked but which was again ticked for automatic renewal.  First of all I got a message saying the fields didn't match.  I assume that meant the password, so I typed them in again, once in the password box and once again in the confirm password box.  Still got the message saying fields didn't match, so I changed the password and typed that in twice.  Same message again, so I re-typed my e mail address, which seemed to work - not sure why because it was already correct, had to untick the automatic renewal box again, this took me to another page which said something on the lines that there'd been an error and someone would be notified.

I've now received an e-mail from FindMyPast saying my account details have been updated, but guess what Continuous Membership is still showing YES, but not only that the password is still the original password, so nothing has changed.  I'll try again, but as far as I can see this is a hopeless cause and I will just have to make a note on my calendar to check automatic renewal nearer the date.

Just tried again, same thing as before.  I've now sent them an e-mail asking what am I supposed to do if their system isn't working.  I guess they just want people to give up and carry on with continuous membership.

In December 2016 I was suffering this very problem.

If you find this thread:
The Lighter Side / Oh dear!! Disappointing news............

Someone very kindly supplied a link which takes you to the "are you really sure you want to leave us" page.  That did seem to do the trick. Box remains unticked...... [Hopefully!]

I went to that thread but can't see a link to take you to the "are you really sure you want to leave us".  What is interesting is that I made a similar comment to the one I've made on here about having to pay full amount and then getting a refund as a loyal customer and my last sentence starts "By the way, I'm still not signed up for automatic renewal"  So how come when I look at my account now, I am signed up for automatic renewal again?  I certainly didn't change it.

This is at the bottom of FindMyPast's 'Update payment card' page.  I'm not renewing this year for various reasons, but I'd be finding out who 'Datacash' are before giving them my card details ::)

Added:  Datacash is a division of MasterCard, apparently.
