I am trying to trace ancestors of Morris Dibnah. In the 1911 census, he was living in Batty Street, St Georges in the East, with wife Esther, daughters Leah, Becky and Rosy, and son Sammy. He is noted as born c1870 in Russia. Esther and Leah are also born Russia (1872 and 1893 respectively). The remaining children were born in London, from 1899 onwards. Indications are that he was a bootmaker.
I have some subsequent information on both him and his family, but am struggling to find any information earlier than the 1911 census.
Any help gratefully appreciated. [I shall also be posting this on the Other Countries board]

So you would hope to find the family in London in 1901 then fingers crossed!
Probably married in Russia if that's where the first child was born.
Births for the children in London should give mothers maiden name (if you don't have that) but am having trouble finding one as yet under that spelling - Dibnah
There are two under Dibna in St Geo East but these may not be yours
Rifka Jun 1899
Herrschel Jun 1900

The family are shown as Dubner on Ancestry
1901 311/89/43

There's a marriage in Stepney Middlesex Mar 1926
Morris Dibnah
Esther Greenstein
-
Some of the births may be registered under DIBNER, mother's maiden name BUDNIE, BOODNEY, BODNIE etc.

The family are shown as Dubner on Ancestry
I see it thanks.
Morris is a slipper maker in 1901. Children Leah 8 - Rebeca 2 - Rosie 8 months.
Marriages for Dibner children in Stepney but you probably have those - Rose 1944 - Sam 1935.

Rifka Jun 1899
Herrschel Jun 1900
I wonder if Rifka is Rebecca in 1901
Herrschel may be Harry, the son of Simon and Sarah Dibner at 1901 311/116/33
Might be worth noting this family - could be related.

There's another one that died young - Toba Dibner born St Geo Dec 1902 mothers name Boodney
Death Mar 1903 Tauba Dibner (female)

Thanks to all for the quick and helpful responses.
These open up some more avenues to explore, and offer yet more potential alternative spellings for Dibnah.
I remain challenged to link Dibnahs, who are almost exclusively clustered in the East Riding of Yorkshire, suddenly appearing in Russia (with no logical antecedents) and then cropping up in what looks like a Jewish community in the East End.......!
Again, many thanks. Peter

Many Jews fleeing Russia came on ships sailing to Hull; their surnames could have been anglicised when they settled in the area.
-
....another helpful thought.
Thank you.

Is it worth investigating the marriage in 1926 Stepney? Should give fathers names/occupations which might be helpful tracing back :)

Yes, I have the certificate. They married at the Great Alie Street Synagogue, Whitechapel. Sadly it merely notes Morris's father as Harris B Dibnah (who appears nowhere else that I can see in on-line records), with no profession noted. Similarly with his new wife.

Have you thought about contacting the Jewish Genealogical Society?

I had not, but will. Thanks again.

Hello.
This is a bit random, but you may be able to actually help me!
If this is the Esther Greenstein who married Morris Dibnah (1926) that I believe it to be, then she had two (illegitimate?) children in 1918 and 1921(ish, I'm not certain of the year for this one). Two boys who were the put into the Barnardo's home in Islington. This was when Esther was living in Wanstead/Mile End and working as a bag maker - living with her family (dad, Alter, mum Fanny).
I am the granddaughter of one of the boys who was in the children's homes. I am currently researching a little into our family history so anything that you have about Esther or Morris, or Esther's siblings (there were many - Louis, who then died in 1912, the year after the census, Lottie, Ada and some others).
Or what happened to Esther and Morris' children I would be very interested. Of course, if the information that I have gathered is correct, then I am distantly related to them...!

Also, I know all about his "new wife" Esther.... since well, she would have been my great grandmother.
I'll swap you Esther info for Morris info??!?!?
