Im am researching descendants of James Heron (Born Blairgowrie Scotland) and from 1870s the Head Gardener at Pollok House Glasgow.
Im aware his daughter Beatrice Heron later Bushnell married and had children James and Joseph and the family migrated to Brisbane Queensland in the 1920s i believe.
Id love to hear from any living Heron descendants......thanks

How odd is this?
Firstly...
Has anyone taken part in any " Escape The Room Challenge" ?
They are really popular at the moment
( solve all the clues to escape from a locked room within 60mins)
There is one at Pollok House and I completed it yesterday with my family. !
It's called "Escape The Past"
This fictional plot, set in 1907 and involves the Head Gardener !
This particular character in the game was based on a real person HE was the Head Gardener "in the time period".
His name was William Heron and there is even a photo of him on the wall in the servants area.
The photo looks like it dates from circa 1910-1930 and ages are hard to tell but,I thought that this William Heron looked to be around 50yrs of age.
He is elderly looking with a big bushy beard!
I could be wrong or perhaps the Game organiser simply used this Head Gardeners name to fit with the 1907 the time period?
I don't know if he is the son of James but, he must be related somehow
Pollok House is now owned by Historic Scotland.

According to online trees, the marriage was in 1912 Jamjar so he arrived in U.K. before then

The Escape Challenges are really good fun rosball.
Trend started in Germany some years ago and rooms are springing up everywhere.
For teams of up to 6 people
I have completed challenges in Glasgow (2), Edinburgh, London and yes, just yesterday at Pollok House.!

Looking at census returns from 1880-1901 it appears that James Heron was married twice.
Children born up until 1889 were born to James with Janet Buchanan ( Beatrice's mother)
They married in Kincardine by Doune on 20 Dec 1870.

I think I see who William Heron was.
He was a child born to James Heron's 2nd marriage but, perhaps he succeeded his father to become the next Head Gardener.?
Looks like James died in 1922 followed by his 2nd wife in 1928.
The fictional Escape Challenge was set in The Butler's room at 1907.
The young gardener, "William Heron" had been found guilty and sent to prison for a crime that he didn't commit.
It's up to the players to solve the clues within 60 mins and prove that the butler did it.
At 1907, the real William Heron was a child from the Heron family and was about 13yrs old
They have used his name and possibly future occupation at Pollok House for the purpose of the game ?
There are loads of old staff photos at Pollok House.
The Heron family must be in them.
There's a large group photo of the Staff Christmas Party dated 1914

The man named William Heron in the photo at Pollok House could not possibly be the son of Head Gardener, James Heron.
It definitely says WILLIAM Heron and in the pic, he is showing another, older man around the gardens

James Heron was the Head Gardener at Pollok.....Ive attached his photo.....he is my great x 2 grandfather on my mums side......my mum was invited to Pollok House a few months ago to open the new "servant quarters" inside Pollok....im very proud of my links to Pollok.....James married twice and his sons feature on the WW1 war memorial at Pollok House...at least 2 of his daughters moved out to Australia....

Robert George Heron is my great grandfather on my mums side...he moved to Manchester in the late 1930s following his daughter Janet Winifred (my grandmother) who moved here with her husband Joe Mckinnon also from Glasgow area...my mum Janet "Janice" Price nee MacKinnon was recently invited back to Pollok House to open the new servant quarters as guest of honour being related to Head Gardener James Heron...incidentally the Heron family originate from Blairgowrie....

In reply to your post. Little bit of confusion here, none of pictures hanging in Pollok House have first names on them. The photo referred to is one with Mr (James) Heron Snr, head gardener and Mr (William) Cox head forester. The photo is from 1905. The bigger photograph next to it of all the servants and families at the Christmas dance is also 1905.
James Heron Snr was born in 1844 in Blairgowerie. He is the father of Beatrice Bushnell née Heron. Beatrice had and older sister named Janet, and two older brothers James and John. William Heron is James' eldest son from a second marriage and is much younger than his four older half-siblings. He died in military service while in Egypt a few months after WWI. His brother Thomas died in military service a week before the war ended.
If anyone knows anything of James' eldest son, James Heron Jnr, also a gardener, I would be grateful for the information. I am conducting an oral history here and have just finished speaking to Robin Heron who believes James Heron Jnr is his great grandfather. I'd like to help him make the link.
Pollok House is now owned by the City of Glasgow and managed by The National Trust for Scotland. My name is Joe and I am the learning officer at Pollok House and can be contacted there.
And yes, "Escape the Past" is indeed a fun escape game! :-)
