Samuel Davies (sometimes Davis) was drowned at Towyn on 3 August 1904. He was a private in the 1st Volunteer Battalion South Staffordshire, who were stationed at a training camp at Towyn.
Although Samuel lived in Wombourne, Staffordshire, newspaper reports reveal that he was buried at Towyn on 7 August 1904.
Does anyone know whether there is a gravestone for Samuel in Towyn? (There is a memorial stone in Wombourne). I'd be very grateful to know (and if some kind soul could let me have a photograph, you'd earn my eternal gratitude!)

Are you sure this is not Towyn in Denbighshire.

Local (ie Staffordshire) newspapers state that he was drowned in Cardigan Bay, which would identify the location as Towyn, Merionethshire.

Yes, I'm aware of that, thanks. I'm interested in whether there is a gravestone/memorial at Towyn, and, if so, what the inscription reads.

Hi
There's a report in the Rhyl Journal of the attendance of the Abergele and Prestatyn Volunteers (Tywyn, DENBIGHSHIRE area) at a camp held at Tywyn, MERIONETHSHIRE, which was also attended by Staffordshire Volunteers, when 3 soldiers drowned one day and another two days later. The Gwynedd Family History Society have published a booklet of Memorial Inscriptions for 2 cemeteries in Tywyn, Merionethshire. I'm sure somebody who uses Rootschat will have copies. If not there will be copies at Dolgellau Archives, open Mondays and Tuesdays.

Nothing for that name in the Saint Cadfan MIs (M213), I'm afraid. The other cemetery is more recent and larger.

Hi
Report says Towyn Cemetery, so would possibly imply the Municipal Cemetery, if there was one. Made enquiries this morning, there is one. Don't know how old it is; been given contact name/phone number for this afternoon. This cemetery is not included in the Gwynedd Family History Society Publication List of Memorial Inscriptions.

Tywyn cemetery is on the road out to Bryncrug. Just about opposite the caravan site.

Hi
Have received info that Samuel Davies and Ernest George Joiner were buried in adjacent graves in the cemetery now controlled by Gwynedd Council. Awaiting further info re exact location within the cemetery.

Hi
Received mobile phone call from the cemetery from my contact. There is no gravestone on either grave, it's just a grassy patch.

Very kind of you to take the trouble Emyr: it's much appreciated.
