Title: REA/WRAY CLOGHER TYRONE
Post by: laurenbavin on Friday 07 April 17 06:47 BST (UK)
Ive been hunting for ages for the parents of my 3x Great Grandfather Stewart Rea (often spelled WRAY)
He was born c1836 and married at Erugal Keerogue, Church of Ireland in 1877 to Margaret Wishart (spelled Wishard in the Civil Registration index.

The family immigrated to New Zealand with George Vessey Stewarts Party in 1875 and died in Katikati New Zealand in 1913. No records in New Zealand mention parents names.
Id appreciate any help anyone can offer.  Thanks

What name is listed for his father on the marriage record? What townland was he living in at time of marriage?

In the Griffiths Valuation for Errigal Keerogue parish, there was a John Rea listed in Cullenbrone townland.

If they married in Errigal Keerogue in 1877, how could they have emigrated in 1875?

The marriage was in 1864, a transcription of the civil record cites both fathers as 'unknown'.  :(

The groom's address is transcribed as 'Lisdooarh' which you can only guess at (my guess for the moment is Lisdoart in Carnteel Civil Parish, as her address is Drumcullion is the neighbouring parish of Errigal Keerogue).

Griffith's Valuation shows several Reas in Lisdoart, including a Stewart Rea (local print date 1860), so Lisdoart is a possibility.

Unfortunately no fathers names on the marriage certificate but I should have mentioned that his residence at the time of marriage was Lisodart. I looked at the wills but I dont think they are the same family. One had a son Stewart but no mention that the son was in New Zealand yet he mentions a daughter in America.
Family stories say he was a gardener for the Stewart family but I have no proof of this

Unfortunately that's not my man. He died in New Zealand in 1913.

Of course he's not the one that died in N.Z. but it does rule out the one who died in 1887 being his father and show that the name Stewart Rea is not at all uncommon in the area.
