Looking for a bit of help with William Smith, above. Born in Farrington Gurney in July 1798, died in the workhouse at Clutton in Feb. 1885, shown age 87. He was a carpenter by trade.
He seems to have been the father of at least six children, all boys, between 1827 and 1848. I have a copy of a marriage certificate which shows him marrying Leah House on 3/12/1842,at the register office in Clutton, on which he is shown as a widower, Leah a spinster appx 36 years old.
Does anyone know who his previous wife was, please ? I have seen the the name Dianah mentioned but can't trace the marriage,...also children 2,3,and 4, Thomas, Daniel and Henry 1832.1836,1839 look to show Leah House as their mother ?
I think House was a fairly popular name in the area, so it's possible the Smiths and the Houses are intertwined somewhere.
Any clarification appreciated, thanks,

Free Reg has a William Smith marrying Dinah Maggs at Wells on 22 July 1818. Witnesses Richard and Sarah Nicholas. Not too far from Farrington Gurney but no sure how you can confirm it as yours. Time frame seems reasonable.

Interesting, and annoying, that Henry Smith born 1839 registered Wells doesn't have a mother's maiden name recorded according to the GRO site.

Just spotted that myself. I would be very tempted to purchase the birth cert to see who the mother is.

So it's looking as if Dianah died, and William began living with Leah and had further children, but for some reason they didn't marry until later.

Henry HOUSE bap 23 Apr 1839 at Chewton Mendip, son of Leah House.

Thanks for the replies, I wondered why William and Dianna married in 1818 but didn't seem to have any children before James in 1827,....a bit more digging produced George Smith bapt.2/7/1820, but looks as though died later same month,..William bapt. 3/12/1820....Frederick, bapt. 23/11/1823... all to William and Dianna. Looks like she died in 1829 as you suspect, and William then took up with Leah House. Thanks again
