Title: Yay! Found them at last! (DWAN)
Post by: v i c k y on Thursday 28 July 05 17:54 BST (UK)
Just wanted to share...

I've been baffled by the absence of my Dwan ancestors (from Bermondsey, Rotherhithe, Southwark etc.) on the census returns for a long time now and today I found a load of them on the 1881 census as "Deran" instead of "Dwan"! Weeeee, I'm so happy! ;D

Tried all the possible spellings: Dwann, D'wan, Duan, Duann, Duanne, Dwayne... ::)

Not being able to find them has been bugging Mum and I for about three years now, as we always knew that they were very much alive and kicking - and living in the same area their entire lives! - but we could never find them on any of the censuses!

I'd love to go back in time with a black biro and teach the enumerator how to print in capitals! >:(

Er, now I just need to find them on all the others :-\ but still! I found them on the 1881 at long last! ;)

Yours excitedly,
Vicky :P

So pleased for you Vicky, isn't it a great feeling ?
and you did it all by yourself.

Yeah, it's great. ;D Thanks both. We found them by a possible address. Should have thought of it ages ago ::) but we just got so fed up, we moved on to the other side of the family instead and kept branching outwards instead of upwards. We've hit a brick wall with the other side of the family now :P and we're waiting for some certificates from the GRO to hopefully help push us along, so thought we'd give the Dwans a try again whilst we wait. 1881 is the easy one, I know, but it still is nice to see them altogether - albeit transcribed - at long last. We were getting a bit paranoid, to be honest, wondering why they were never around on census night! Not the easiest name for a complete stranger to identify, to be fair...

Anyway, they're all here if anyone's interested in my elusive rellies: RG11/0564 (folio 21, page 36)
Elizabeth Deran (51) is the head, living at 4 Brewers Court, Bermondsey.

Deran indeed! ::) And the head's a "Windower". ;)

Vicky, they were at the same address in 1871 as DWAN RG10/633 folio 14 page 22 and the preceding page if you don't have them already ;D

Oh wonderful, thank you all so much! ;D That's fanastic. I had a hunch that there was an older brother called Thomas and found out a few things about him on the off-chance that he was related. "Leather Jappaner" is right. It's a Japanese way of treating leather, apparently. :)

Thanks so much for taking an interest. We're really glad to finally see them all listed. It makes them seem more real. We're going to try to find out something about George Senior (born 1824) now. He's the top name on our tree at the moment and we haven't been able to get back any further. We wrote to the GRO requesting a marriage certificate for George Dwan and an "Elizabeth" ages ago, but no joy. Now it seems we have a maiden name for Elizabeth, so another lead to follow at least. ;D

Thank you all so much for this. We're both so grateful to you for all the help and support.

Talk about information (and excitement!) overload here! :P ;D

I'm drawing a near blank in 1891  :(

This should be William:
RG12/375

Bermondsey St James
174 New Church Street

Jane Carter, head, wid, 60, b. London Stepney
Christopher Slayford, son in law, 33, Artist and Glass Master, b. Birmingham Ashton
Emily do. dau, 35, Shirt & Collar Ironer b. London Bermondsey
Christopher do., grandson, 9, b. London Hatcham
Charles do., grandson, 7, b. do.
Alice do., granddau, 3, b. London Newcross
William do., grandson, 11 mths, b. do.
William Dwan, son in law, 22, Coal porter & Geeral Labourer, b. London Bermondsey
Alice Dwan, dau, 22, b. do.
Arthur Dwan, grandson, 4, b. do.
Elizabeth Dwan, granddau, 2, b. do.
George Dwan, grandson, (1 mth?), b. do.

And Thomas:
RG12/371

4 Brandon Street

Thomas Dwan, head, 44, Leather Dresser, b. Bermondsey
Sarah Ann, wife, 42, b. do.

This could be James after all (I'm seeing Rotherhithe is the same reg Dist as Bermondsey - St Olave Southwark) - still in 1891

RG12/384
Folio 119 p. 15
Rotherhithe Christchurch, London

25 Gilham Court

James Dwan, head, 29, General Labourer, b. London Rotherhithe
Elizabeth, wife, 31, b. do.
James, son, 3, b. do.

and George:
RG12/385
Folio 6 p. 6
Rotherhithe Christchurch, London

76 Paradise St Court (?)

George Dwan, head, 38, Labourer, b. Rotherhithe
Mary, wife, 37, Seamstress, b. do.
Nelly, dau, 10, scholar, b. do.
George, son, 9, scholar, b. do.
Edward, son, 6, scholar, b. do.
Lizzie, dau, 3, scholar, b. do.

Tanja, thank you SO much for all that. I nip downstairs for dinner and you've found all this lovely information by the time I get back! Thank you! :)

That is William with wife Alice Eliza Carter/Dwan. :) I wonder if they were all living there or if some of them were just visiting. :o Busy house otherwise! I know most about these as they were my g-grandfather's parents. Arthur was the eldest of 11 children!

I found Thomas as "Thomas Down" - one of the more obvious transcriptions. ::)

That looks very much like James, too. His wife was formerly Elizabeth Graham, so it fits. :)

And last but not least, George. This is the most interesting one for me, as I thought his wife's name was Emma! :D Now I can scratch many possible relatives off my list... and put them on my tree!

Thank you very much for all that, Tanja.  You're a star. I can't thank you enough. :-*

Hi Vicky,

here's George in 1901:

RG13/400
Folio 17 p. 27
Rotherhithe Christchurch, London

11 Roney (?) St

George Dewan, head, 48, General labourer, b. Bermondsey
Mary, wife, 44, (Sack?) Mending/Canvas, b. Rotherhithe
Thomas, son, 18, General labourer, b. do.
Edward, son, 16, Labourer Stone Work / Mason Lab, b. do.
Elizabeth, dau, 13, b. do.
Mary, dau, 10, b. do.
William, son, 5, b. do.

??? Wonder if George and Thomas are one and the same boy...

Tanja  :)

Thanks for that, Tanja. :) I didn't know that he had a son called Thomas and by discovering an Edward, you might just have identified the "cousin Ted" we have in an old photo. ;D

George and Thomas are two different people, trust me. ;) Thomas was born in 1849 and George in 1854. Thomas married Sarah Ann Saunders in 1873 and George's wife is... well, a mystery at the moment. We had her down as Emma Allen, so not sure who this Mary is! :P

Thanks again for everything,
Vicky

::) I was actually talking about George's children Thomas age 18 in 1901 and George age 9 in 1891!
Wonder whether they always named their children like their siblings just to give us headaches!

::) They've given me a headache already! :P I see what you mean now, sorry about that.

I'm starting to come round to the idea of banning names and referring to everyone by a number instead. ;)

Just to stop anyone from looking...

Have got James Dwan (born 1863) on the 1901 census. He's a waterside labourer. He died in 1906 in an accident at Victoria Docks - finding out about his death is our next mission. Have found the reference for his death certificate, so looks like it's more money for the GRO. ::) His children were James (1889), William (1895) and Elizabeth (1899) - so your theory is definitely right, Tanja! :P

Just to be thorough... I've located William on the 1901 census, too. He was a Divan! ::)

Thanks, Donna. I'm taking a break from it all at the mo, but must get back into it soon. It's so addictive and the Dwans have given us a lot of work, but it's been worth it. :)
