Title: Curiosity - RN
Post by: gralorn on Wednesday 12 April 17 20:32 BST (UK)
Looking through the list of the personnel buried in the CWGC cemetery at the Kinloss Abbey, Morayshire I noticed that there is one Royal Navy grave, a Leading Seaman who in fact died seventy one years ago today on the 12th April 1946 at HMS Pembroke. I realise that HMS Pembroke was a shore base at Chatham in Kent, I also know that he was married to Nora Lerita Cameron of Findhorn. What I am curious about is how he died. Was it an accident, a training accident, a wound or illness received during the war. Nothing says how he died, just that he did on the 12th April 1946. His number was C/JX141297 Leading Seaman John Grant Cameron aged 27. Curiosity has got me in why he died in 1946 after the war had finished and at a Royal Navy shore base. Would anyone have any idea or knowledge on how he actually died?

Perhaps he sustained injuries during the War and subsequently died at a Naval Hospital??

Any person still in military service at the time of their death between  3 September 1939  and  31 December 1947 qualified for CWGC commoration. The location and cause of their death was immaterial. ( see "In From The Cold" project)

Read all about the project that started some ten years ago, most interesting. One learns something new every day. Still wonder how Cameron died though as he was recognised long before IFTC for a plot in the CWGC cemetery instead of the local cemetery!

I believe there were some RN casualties near Albania around that time.

It was called the Corfu Channel Incident. I found out about it from an old neighbour who was involved in it.

HMS Pembroke may have been his accounting base but he died in the Kinloss Registration District. Illness or an accident seems the likely cause. If you really want the answer then his death certificate is available to view on line right now on ScotlandsPeople (6 credits). Families had the option of a service burial in the appropriate plot or to make their own arrangements for burial nearer home. That worked well. IFTC only deals with the small minority who slipped through the net.

I think IFTC are simply re-stating the criteria established by CWGC, presumably shortly after the Second World War ended, which seem likely to have been in effect when  Cameron died. The cause of his death could be something quite mundane. I have a serving soldier in my tree who, after a Saturday night out with the lads, was recovered from the river on the following Monday. Because he died within the prescribed time frame, his grave is marked with a CWGC headstone.
