Title: Alexander Meek, Peebles, Handloom Weaver, Greenwich Pensioner.
Post by: Skoosh on Friday 14 April 17 10:48 BST (UK)
Folks, trying to find the parents of this guy, b.about 1780, he was in the Royal Navy during the war & appears in the mention of an irregular marriage, 1811 at the baptism of their son Alexander an Episcopal Chapel in Edinburgh,

The spouse is a Mary Mitchell from Peebles where they settle, I don't think he's from there although says he is in the 1861 census.  Biggiesknowe, Peebles, Alexander Meek, 82, widower, Greenwich pensioner, b. Peebles. His Death Cert' 28 July 1862 unfortunalely has his parents as unknown, registered by his grandson, also Alexander, so not surprising particularly if not a "Gutterbluid!"  Peebles native.
Any thoughts welcome.

Hi Skoosh ,

Alexander seems to give his birthplace as Peebleshire in 1841 & 1851  :-\

Thanks for that Ev, he also has staying with him in Peebles in the 1851 census, a George Meek 49 b.Whitburn, & family. He was a miller in nearby Skirling & obviously some relation. His father was a miller in the Red Mill, Polkemmet, Whitburn which is why I think Alexander was from there also. Meek's are common in Whitburn, unusual in Peebles.

Skoosh.
