Caroline Alice Stammers born Jan qtr 1899 Grantham, Lincolnshire, England to Alice Stammers. Between 1901 & 1911 census Caroline was put in the Barkingside Barnado’s home in Ilford, Essex, England.
29th June 1911 she started journey to Canada, arriving 11th July 1911 on the Sicilian.
Destination was Peterborough, Ontario.
Looking for anything of her life after Barnados, her marriage, any children.
I’ve been in touch with Barnado’s so not expecting info on that period of her life but if anything is available it will be welcome.
Happy to share details of Alice’s family if anyone is looking. Thanks.

Not found under surname STAMMERS in 1921 census, maybe married but marriage not found in Ontario records. She was still alive in 1920 as found in this record, wonder if original gives residence?

Great find, Sandra. Any way to find out if she was British?
1921 Canada census has a Mrs Carolina McCullough age 24
Born abt 1897 Quebec married to Clyde, living in Winnipeg at the time.
I’m assuming Robert is her son on the grave stone.
Anyway this is all very exciting and more than I dared hope for.
Thanks for your help and I look forward to anything else you can find.

Lets see what an obituary would turn up, if we can find one. Doubt very much that the people you have listed above are correct. Clyde was James Clyde McCullough - 2 July 1893 - Kincardine, Ontario, Canada and passed away 1943 - Winnipeg Man. Caroline was Constance Emma Smyth aka Caroline Smith or Smyth.

Darn. The one who died in 1988 seems to be the Caroline Avanell SCHADE who married John Thomas Mccullough 1923 in Winnipeg. Her obit lists brothers George,Ralph and H Arthur. They're in Alberta in 1916.

Well done for getting the cert. That was fast!
Her dob (providing that she knew it) will help in eliminating other "candidates".
O Canada! My native land has very strict privacy laws.

Just in case she popped over the border - the US SSDI shows 3 death records of a Caroline with that birth date but sadly none born in England :'(

The Barnado’s magazine only listed Caroline Stammers as giving a donation of 2 dollars in August 1920. Sorry that’s no help. Thanks.

Between 1901 & 1911 census Caroline was put in the Barkingside Barnado’s home in Ilford, Essex, England.
This doesn't help you find out the adult years of Caroline, but does narrow down when she went to Barkingside.
Her birth address was 11 Springfield, which is the same address used for her school admission to Grantham Spitalgate Church of England Primary School. No father or guardian listed. Birthdate matches what you posted from her birth register. She was there until 01 Feb 1906 when she transferred to junior (for which I don't know if records exist, or are available).
-
Thanks so much bbart, that’s really helpful to know that she was in Grantham at least until 1906 and she likely did know her half brother for a while. Thanks again.

I have an update of information about Caroline thanks to a letter uploaded to an Ancestry tree. The owner of the tree has given me permission to use the information on RootsChat.
He had written to Barnado's requesting information about Caroline and while they could not reveal confidential details, they said they could provide certain information for family research purposes. What they provided was very helpful.
They confirmed her date and place of birth and details of her journey to Canada. Also that she was admitted in 1910 which fits with the death of her great aunt, whose home she was born in and her address on school records.
The whereabouts of her mother was unknown at the time of her admission. Her half brother James Willis was with his father. Her last known whereabouts was in 1962 when she was married and living in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Her married name was Cooke.
I wonder if her married name may help to find anything else. Hoping someone can help.
Thanks in anticipation.

Hi,
I found a possibility for William N Cooke....short obit in Toronto papers.
He is William Naftel Cooke, Major WW1. He died at Sunnybrook Medical Centre on April 10 1980. Husband of Carol A Cooke. Uncle to Elizabeth Chitty Wilson and to Michael Willes-Chitty. A private service was held at St. James the Less.
***obit doesn't give an age for him or say where he was buried.
His military record says he was born in 1893.
There is a William N Cooke, died 1980, buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Don't see Carol or Caroline there.

RK
PS - I looked in a few Toronto Directories online...William at 112 Glenforest has the middle initial N in all of the entries I checked.
-
Carol A Cooke died at Sunnybrook Medical Centre on Aug 30 1986. Same niece and nephew mentioned. A private service was held at St James the Less.
No indication of her age, maiden name etc.

As for the Willes Chittys...
1901 census has William N Cooke in Toronto with parents William and Alice Cooke (Alice Tranter Cooke is listed as next of kin on William N Cooke's military file - so I think this is the right family). Several siblings. One is Nora A Cook.

Daughter Norah Elizabeth (nee Wilson Chitty) Wilson...obit in the Globe and Mail 4 Jan 2000. It mentions several family members - including her late Uncle William and Aunt Carol Cooke. Also her late brother Michael Robert Chitty.

ALice Tranter Naftel Cooke died at the home of her daughter Mrs R M Willes Chitty on March 23 1933. Wife of William Cooke, daughter of Major Naftel of Guernsey, Chanel Islands. Funeral from her late residence, Poplar Plains Road. Funeral service at Church of the Messiah.
RK
-
William Naftel Cooke married Maude Lillian Morrow in 1935. Marriage cert says his occupation is Real Estate. Neither has been married before. He is 52 and she is 50.
Maude Lillian Morrow Cooke died May 29 1938 - interment Mount Pleasant Cemetery. (short obit in Globe and Mail)
If this is the William Cooke, husband to your Caroline - then he married her after 1938. Do you know if your Caroline was married more than once??

Thank you so much RunKitty for all the information. I'm afraid all I have is she was Stammers in 1920 and Cooke in 1962.

Hi,
There is an obit from 1984 for a 91 year old Caroline Cooke of Mississauga - wife of the late James D Cooke. Several children and grandchildren are mentioned. Burial in Shannonville Cemetery, Belleville.
Just looked at the Shannonville Cemetery on findagrave. Not the right Caroline. This one is Caroline M Ritz, born 1896
