This postcard was sent in Canada but the church seems out of place. Believe there could have been relatives in Devon at the time but....
-
Certainly has an 'English' look about it doesn't it.
You say sent in Canada - do you mean the image is on a postcard?

I agree that it certainly has a very English look to it. The doorway/arch (with mouldings) looks Norman. Fabric of the church looks like flint.
It looks like there might be a horse sale taking place, perhaps. :)
Is there anything written on the back of the postcard? Address? Postmark? Anything to hint at the location of the sender or receiver?
-
Agree re the sale. All this horses are wearing halters and the metals hurdles/railings surrounding one side of the sale ring look temporary. Horse breeds don't look UK native breeds - so not a roundup sale straight off the moor???
-
I think the horses look too tame to be directly off the moor. Hopefully someone will come along who can identify the church .

Based on the church, I think it's Bampton in Oxfordshire. This picture is from a similar angle:

In case anyone thinks it looks familiar, it appeared in Downton Abbey. Also, my wife has ancestors buried there.

I think this confirms it's Bampton:

That's the Bampton in Devon, which also has a horse fair. This is info about the Oxfordshire Bampton http://www.bamptonoxon.co.uk/history-of-bampton.asp Trying to type this on kindle, so apologies for typing errors!

Very well done Arthur, great find.

This is a lovely photo. I can find dozens of pictures with Bampton horse fair and dozens of pictures of the church, but this is the only one I have seen of the horse fair outside the church.

Thanks for all the feedback. I should have added more detail about the card.
It was dated November 14, 1912 and mailed from Shakespeare, Ontario Canada. Postmarked November 15, 1912. Addressed to a great uncle in Mazenod, Saskatchewan advising him that his father was near death. His father passed November 16, 1912.
Mystery is why a postcard of an English church was used.
-
I'm so happy you identified this Arthur. It was driving me mad! :)
-
Again many thanks.
Bampton, Devon makes perfect sense as family was in Devon before coming to Canada

Thanks for all this research.
Mystery remains as to how this postcard was used in 1912 in Shakespeare, Ontario Canada. When Devon was suggested it made sense as there was family from there. Oxfordshire seems to have no connection we can find.
Possible that there were more companies making postcards in England and they were shipped to Canada.
There is an odd mark on the reverse of the card Upsidedown 421G (see attached)
