Title: Edith Green and George Burgess
Post by: tristadubrule1 on Friday 21 April 17 22:09 BST (UK)
I'm looking for information on this man and wife George Burgess and Edith Green....
I don't have birth or death dates or marriage dates...

I know they had a son Frederick George Burgess born March 23 1907 Ontario, Canada
and died Sept 17 1958
Frederick married Edith Adelaide Labatte on Nov 28 1932
Edith Adelaide Labatte was born March 2 1914 and died 1969 (how ever Ive found different death dates for her).

Frederick and Edith are my great grandparents.... George and Edith are my great great grandparents.... I'm told that "Edith" was native and was part of a band, either Chippewa or Cherokee?.... I'm looking for more information on that, however I cant get passed George and Edith's missing information....

Any help would be great..
Thanks Trista

Hi Trista. I know this is not what you are looking for, but I was intrigued when I saw the LaBatte name. I believe Edith Adelaide LaBatte was of Huron (Wendat) heritage on her mother’s side and Ojibwa* on her father’s side. The 1901 Census of Canada for Tay Township, Simcoe East, Ontario lists her father Louis Napoleon (also called John) Labatte, her mother Marceline, and her maternal Grandmother Eliza Gaudette as Huron FB (French Half-Breed). They are also noted as “R” for Red.
John’s occupation was given as Laborer Shanty Man. I am guessing that translates to woodsman!

Edith’s paternal grandfather Louis Labatte was married to Felicite Solomon. Now we’re talking a rich historical background! Her grandfather Henri and great-grandfather William both had Ojibwa wives. Henri Solomon was born 23 October 1797 on Drummond Island, Chippewa, Michigan. Drummond is the only island in the Manitoulin island chain, which is part of the United States. This area was heavily populated by French Voyageurs and First Nation families. Henri died 18 March 1867 at Wikwemikong First Nation, Ontario. On Manitoulin Island.

*The Ojibwa (also Ojibwe, Ojibway and Chippewa) are an Aboriginal people in Canada and the United States who are part of a larger cultural group known as the Anishinaabeg.

Frederick George Burgess born 8 Jun 1905 Ottawa Ontario.  His parents full names as derived from 2 other births were George Thomas Burgess & Ellen/Nellie Louisa Brown.  The mother's surname is the wrong colour, i.e., brown not green, still I suspect this is the Frederick George Burgess you are searching for.

George Thomas Burgess 27 married Ellen Louisa Brown 25 on 7 Sep 1904 in Ottawa.
His parents George Robert Burgess & Mary Ann Scrader/Scroder.
Her parents Hiram Brown & Dora Maria Rause/Rouse.

Burgess family in 1921 Ottawa census
George 45 born England
Ellen 42 born Ontario
Fred G 16
Howard 10 (born 2 Jul 1911)
Lester 4
Clarence 2

Son Charle Robert Burgess born 5 Jul 1908 must have died before 1921.

From looking at ancestry trees I think this is the couple referred to.  Trees show his birth in London, Ontario.  Since the family is Roman Catholic you can use the unindexed Roman Catholic parish records on FamilySearch to possibly find baptism, marriages etc.

The Fred G & Edith A Burgess referred to in original post are buried side by side in Orillia Ontario.  Try finding any trace of this family other than online trees with no credible sources.  It is known from the gravestone that this couple existed.  Edith Burgess widow can be found in the 1965 and 1968 voters list at 273 Franklin in Orillia.  In 1968 she appears to have a son F and his wife M living with her.

Sorry been awhile since I worked on the family tree...
I know I can order birth, death and marriage cert's for my English side of the tree, can
we do that for Canada? Maybe that could help. My Mother is one of the oldest living
relative for the Burgess side that we know of. However he memory isn't well and she didn't know her
Dad (Kenneth SR Burgess) that well...

Thank you everyone for the help! I will follow up on the information that everyone has posted.

Thanks
Trista
