Title: British Home Children - 5 siblings
Post by: ancestorsnoop on Saturday 22 April 17 00:19 BST (UK)
My ancestor's nephew James Greaves, Jr., of Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, had 9 children.  His wife died when the youngest was a little over a year old and the oldest 18 years.  James was an invalid from the affects of war, and became a patient in the workhouse infirmary.

The 3 oldest sons: Percy James, Cecil George, & Joseph Clarence were able to take care of themselves.  The next 5: Violet Alicia Agnes, Daisy Louisa Jane, Charles Arthur Edward, Nellie Elizabeth Rose, & Lily Ethel were sent to Nova Scotia, Canada, in 1901.  The youngest Elizabeth May was adopted by a family in England.

I am having a hard time tracing Nellie Elizabeth Rose Greaves, born 26 Nov 1894, in Aston or Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.  She married David James Cota, 29 Oct 1918, in Frontenac, Ontario, Canada.  When David James Cota died 14 Aug 1935, in Hastings, Ontario, Canada, his wife was listed as Ethel Cota.  So what happened to Nellie?  One tree says Nellie married an "unknown Spicer."

The 1949 Canada, Voters List for Hastings South, Ontario, #345 & #346 are: William Spicer, guard, 9 Dundas St. W. & Mrs. Nellie Spicer, 9 Dundas St. W.  Another family tree has a William Francis Spicer (1882-1921) who also lived in Trenton, Hastings, Ontario, Canada, married after the 1921 census to a "Cote."

I correspond with a grandniece of the 5 children who went to Canada.  She just learned about them being sent to Canada and would like to know what happened to them.

The youngest Elizabeth May married Robert Astle in Birmingham, England.  After Robert died in 1952, she went to Canada, where it is believed she remained.  She sailed from Liverpool, England, 25 Nov 1952, to Halifax, Canada, on the ship Ascania.   I would love to find her also.  She was born 17 October 1899, in Aston or Birmingham, Warwickshire, England

A great big Thank You Sandra!!!  It is taking me awhile to look through it all.  I had found some of these items (but not all).  I wasn't quite sure on some of them, so I am so happy to see you came to the same conclusion.

I wonder where Violet was on the 1910 census in the USA?  When she married Sidney Charles Lynds, 12 Jan 1918, in Somersville, Massachusetts, she was a "Violet Richie."  I wonder why she came to the USA, whereas the rest of the 5 stayed in Canada?

Perhaps you could contact the Quinte West Library to see if there are obituaries for Nellie and her husband?

Thank you cosmac for the information on Charles A. E. Greaves!!!  It seems to match & confirm the family information shared with me and in online trees.  It gets confusing with all the different names given for the parents.  So I appreciate everyone's help and insight.  I forgot to mention the James Greaves's wife was Alice Chapman.

Canada Voters List - 1953 - 152 Manor Road East Toronto - Eglington District - Mrs Elizabeth Astle - Widow -

Canada Voters List 1968 - 165 Manor Road East Toronto - Elizabeth Astle - Unemployed.

I was excited by this possibility, so I did a Google search for "Elizabeth Astle" in Toronto, and found an obituary for a "Astle, Elizabeth (Isabelle) Aniela (nee Kalichak)," who moved to Toronto in the late 1940s.  Is she the "Mrs. Elizabeth Astle" listed on the voter list?  If so, I wonder where Elizabeth May Greaves Astle lived?

Thank you Sandra for proving that the Mrs. Elizabeth Astle in Toronto is not the one I am seeking, so it is now back to looking for the right one.  I didn't think to look for Elizabeth (Isabelle) Aniela (nee Kalichak)'s husband.
